Hike! Yamnuska Traverse

Trail: Yamnuska (Mount Laurie) Traverse

Location: At the highway 1X and highway 1A (Bow Valley Trail) intersection, head east for 2km and turn into the signed parking lot that says 'Yamnuska'. Follow the road and you will end up at a fairly large parking lot.

Distance: 10.8 Km Loop (about 6 hours hiking time)

Elevation: ~900m

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous.  There is a narrow ledge 30m long that must be traversed about 300m from the summit. There is a cable to hang on to but it isn't for the faint of heart as there is some exposure.  Please do some research and ensure you are comfortable with this before signing up.

We will meet at the Sirocco Park and Ride to sort out carpools and directions. I plan on leaving the park and ride by 8:30 as it is St. Patty's Saturday and I need to get back to town for some festivities. We will go ahead with those in attendance at that time.

Make sure you dress for the weather and are adequately prepared for this hike! Sturdy hiking boots, microspikes/icers, gloves for gripping chains, rock, etc., gaiters, trekking poles, warm jacket, toque. Also bring the snacks you desire (this hike is about 6 hours not including travel) and plenty of water to drink (2L).  Please be courteous and bring money to share in the cost of fuel for the carpool.

This Meetup is weather dependent and will be cancelled if the weather is unfavourable.  Also, if there are any unforeseen circumstances that arise (trail conditions, etc.) we will simply try to switch to another trail located somewhat nearby.

*Disclaimer:  You are fully aware that organizers are not professional guides and you assume all responsibility for your safety and well-being. You are fully prepared with proper gear and you're physically fit to do this hike with the group.  Although I have done this hike before, please keep in mind that I am not a guide so everyone coming should do their homework.

Hey all. There is a bit of a waitlist for this hike and I really have no intention of increasing the limit. If you can no longer attend, do not have the required equipment(microspikes/icers), or are uncomfortable with the technical sections (chains/exposure) please remove yourselves from the list so someone else can take your place!

    Thanks!

Everyone is to have microspikes for this hike. It's not known if we will need them yet, but yes everyone must have them.

I would recommend micro spikes (like the red ones that many have) for this one. We'll also be crossing a steep snow covered slope on the back side for about 100 feet or so. In the range of avalanche risk. It's winter conditions so anyone who has done this in the summer should know it shouldn't be taken lightly. It's a fun one though. See you all there.

Oooh, do you think I should have the red spikes like you guys for this hike?
