Wow, yes, an SASE for a paper query (as opposed to digital) submission is pretty much a requirement for any publishers I know of. You have to give them a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope into which they can stuff any reply they have towards your query or submission. A form rejection letter most likely, a few words of critical feedback would be better, and a request for a full manuscript submission would be the best. The point is, there is no way they are going to pay postage for a reply to you, and will likely not even look at your submission unless they see an SASE right off the bat. But many are now having an email (digital) reply option, precluding the need for an SASE. Always read and carefully follow the submission guidelines, as publishers and agents pay close attention to what they are telling you they want and what you give them.

    • Barbie T.

Okay, gotcha now, Les, and thanks...:D And yes, that was how the world DID work for pretty much every submission, article or longer, before the Net got swinging. I was still doing hand-ins, in the 90s but now almost everything is digital, get your acronym now, lol...SASE, SOOOO official! I thought you were describing some serious "process" i had never heard of, beg pardon if I'm still brain-dead from the surgery, I'm SURE I am...:D

Most publishers now take digital submissions, or reply by email even if you submit on paper, but some still need the SASE. Anyway, if anyone needs to get U.S. stamps for an SASE to an American publisher, there is a place downtown called Stamps N Covers, and the guy there sells American paper stamps.

    October 23, 2013

    • Barbie T.

What does SASE stand for tho, that was what I didn't get? You mean to get back your manuscript after the publisher has seen it? I've never dealt with book submissions, just article work and that's handled differently, Les, if you could fully explain yourself here to All of Us, this process, I think we'd all be grateful...:)

Question: Anyone know an EASY way to send an SASE to America? Canada Post talks about International Reply Coupons, but I don't know if they really know. Easiest would be to somehow buy American stamps - Canada Post is not allowed to sell them.

    October 18, 2013

    • Barbie T.

What is SASE, I'm ignorant of this so maybe clarify for the dumb people in the room, aka ME...:D

Self addressed stamped envelope. Its essential to include in the package to a prospective agent, if you

To Heather: The Story Game: MAX TWO paragraphs like always BUT the "details" 1929, Harold Holiwell, New York City do NOT have to be verbatim in your story, just info you use to weave your story...;) And, my oh my, am I thrilled some people actually BELIEVED that Harold was a rude dude, my name choice was an authentic lie, ain't that grand! :D

To All - TRY and THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX on this one...;) I have used details that "suggest" the "obvious", ON PURPOSE, so you would have to think hard to NOT write on the obvious...devilishly devious of MsBurb, huh? (I cannot be trusted, I am evil that way...:P )

Any other questions you have on anything, let'em fly, I'm back and monitoring this Page again...:)

Your sickly-but-getting-healthier Chief Executive Hacker, Barbie...:D

I'll announce the Topic(s)/Activities for this meeting closer to the date, i know what they'll be, just waiting to see all's well with me first, health-wise, that i will be able to join you all then...:) (continued above)

Why, yes, I SHALL :D Just chime in with the NEXT sentence of your own ANY TIME and multiple times, one Member adding after the other, so OUR "story" evolves. As promised, the first sentence goes like this>>> "Once Upon A Time there was a Winnebago"...GOOOOO! :D

I'd like to participate but is this the right place or do you have a link somewhere?

      October 20, 2013

    • Rick N.

Sorry Heather, Barbara is still recovering from her surgery. I believe she wanted people to write out their little stories and bring them to the next meeting. And the Harold name is completely made up. You can write whatever you like without limitation. The only request was to try to stick to a few short paragraphs.

      October 21, 2013

  • Barbie T.

Don't forget to submit your Anonymous two paragraph attempts on the THREE DETAILS listed on your Meeting Handout tonight - 1929, Harold Holiwell, New York City. These details do NOT have to be typed verbatim in your MAXIMUM two paragraph attempts, they are just information around which you wrap your micro story. This exercise/game is to hone your skill in SURGICAL delivery so wordiness is NOT the goal here! THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX and write not what might look like the obvious but the exact opposite of the obvious, if you can ;) Good Luck, One & All, they will be read out load at our November 19th meeting...:D

I'll say a Big Hi once I'm back so everyone knows "Elvis is BACK in the Building"...til then, tra-la for now, Me! :D

Once Upon A Time there was a Winnebago camper abandoned in the deep mountain country of the north. Long lost to the adventurous family first driving it into the forest, but inhabited now by others.

<So I copy/paste. Is this the right place to keep this story going?>

    October 2, 2013

They had never seen rain drops like this before, nor had they ever experienced the distinct after scent of the rain. It never rained back home. They knew that home as they once knew it had gone. The abandoned winnebago camper was as lost as they were. They were safe now and this beat up camper had become their haven.

I finished a first draft of Confession of a Secular Jihadist. I changed the point of view completely to first person in an interview with the police. I need to work on details so they are more sense driven and do some serious editing.

If I send this off to Canada Writes it will be provocative even if it goes nowhere. Some of the references are Catholic specific, others Quebec specific, still others like the bare breasted Femen currently in the newspapers.

It actually felt good working on this. A bit of a catharsis from my own experience as an ex-catholic and victim of xenophobic exclusion while in Quebec.

BTW. the Janet Burroway Writing Fiction book has been very helpful to me.

    Keep on writing.
