Postponed! - Starting Somewhere and Paying It Forward.... (Calgary Floods)

  • June 24, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Well, this DSN Meetup is going to be a lot different than the past…

Note: this has been posted on Friday evening (June 21) and I hope that by Monday, that the rain has stopped and the river has turned back to normal.  For those who know me, let’s “Pay It Forward” where we can… :)

So, my idea is to help clean up a park, help someone clean out their wet basement, business, clean up debris along the river….?   Any ideas anyone?

This is not about: that someone’s insurance will pay for it; the city will do the work (which we will pay in taxes)… This is about showing our support for Calgary, for a community or just one family, one person, one senior, someone/anyone who has had some speedbumps in life and could use a helping hand!

"A ripple effect that can change/help others can change the difference in life more than you know… " PB

So if you have an idea to help in central Calgary (we need to start somewhere – I figure central location for all), and whether it is a family, friend, senior…. let’s help!

Please send me an email with your suggestions and we will figure out one of the best, safest… place(s) that we should start.

I will post the address of this meetup on Monday June 24th in the morning.

So…Who is in?  Who is willing to make a change?  Who is willing to lend a hand? …

This will be open to DSN Members including their older children (please use your discretion/responsibility on this day).  Note: my daughter (age 12) will be supporting this event with me as well.

No DSN fee will be collected, but feel free to bring work gloves, garbage bags, shovels, wheel barrows…

Have a safe weekend with family and friendsJ

Cheers,

Mike

THIS EVENT IS POSTPOND FOR TONIGHT!

To be fair to everyone and for people to have time to plan their evening, I have postponed this event until the weekend and it will give the city time to assess the areas and make a game plan for clean up. I will reschedule this event in the next 24 hrs. - Thank you for your support.

Please start to collect clothing, boards games, bathroom items... together as well.

    Have a gret day everyone.

    Cheers,

    Mike

I will keep a watch on the locations where you all may be. Before I RSVP I just need to make sure I can commute to at least one of the places. So far I'm still not allowed in my area (Eau Claire) or go in to work on Monday (happy about that part). If we don't work on Tuesday you can probably count on me that day as well.

I work until 5. I will see where you are at at that time. Best wishes everyone for your volunteer day!

Hi Mike - here's another site to check out - Calgary Clean Up - looks like they're moving towards a call to action for volunteers and looking for volunteers within/nearby the Re-entry locations

I might be voulunteering for picking up stray animals in flood areas so if this incorporates the early evening I will not be able to make the Do Something New event, otherwise I look forward to meeting others who wish to pay it forward.

I am stilll looking for volunteer opportunities, as there are a lot of communites still assessing the damages or still under water. Any suggestions that you find, please let us know.

Hi Emma! Could you please send me this video too? Thank you!

one other suggestion... if anyone is thinking about hands on flood cleanup, good to read this brochure http://www.smcalgary.... tells you you need to disinfect stuff and wear gloves and such because flood water is kind of dangerous from a bug and germ point of view...Your health may be at risk
      after flooding
(* phooey, tried to paste in some of the info but didn't work....

Mike, what is the status of reception centres? Any place in need of volunteers? Things like taking care of seniors, etc? Any place who need volunteers to stay there overnight?

    June 23, 2013

I would suggest to start with sunnyside as it is mostly accessible with public transit! Ideas?

do need to remind you that 'a central location' may be inaccessible...unless it is north of the river, west of 14th street or south of ???canyon meadows? or east of Inglewood... unless things are looking up... haven't checked lately...

Southland Leisure Centre has been requesting food for evacuees this morning. It may be something to check tomorrow to see if making food for them would be an option. Drop in Centre needs volunteers and supplies as well. Believe the South Fish Creek evacuee centre is fine, not needing any help unless you are a medical professional. Great idea Mike.

    June 23, 2013

  • Lynnell I.

anyone available during the day. the drop in centre needs volunteers.

    June 23, 2013

I could definitely help there. I used to volunteer at the Mustard Seed. The problem is getting there!! I travel by transit and the trains aren't running into downtown with downtown closed off from the flooding, so once it's opened up again, I'll look into helping them out. Thanks!!

If we can do something next weekend I am in - this week I work evenings. This could be an on-going summer project. One of my favorite spots - Inglewood Bird Sanctuary - will not be accessible for a while but when it is and they need help - let's go!!

Actually maybe, see my comments on where I can get to and my fitness/strength (ok, youth) level ;-)

Sounds promising... I am unevacuated, and in fact there is apparently a warehouse for donations in my area SE, but there are also a lot of places I can't really get to. If it got a lot worse, which it doesn't sound like it will, I would probably be evacuated also. I think today I can only go further East and then North...I haven't ventured far per the request of the authorities to keep the traffic down. I probably would only be good for a pretty short stint of heavy physical work, although I'm certainly willing to look at a shorter stint. I suspect there is a lot of packing and assembling of things required eg hygiene kits for those in shelters....

Anyway, I'll watch out for opportunities...

PS it occurs to me that entertainment, either of adults or children might be useful for those getting 'half sick of shelters'! I don't play an instrument, but as a Raging granny am fairly fearless and a bit of a ham if someone needs support for a singalong!

my 2 teens will be there as well. we do have a pickup avail to help.
