Bring out the Scottish in you! - Calgary Highland Games

** This is an Outdoor event so it is weather dependent

WHAT:

The Calgary Highland Games is one of the premier Highland Games in Western Canada. Started in 1913, it is one of the oldest gatherings in North America. This year the CHG are celebrating 100 years, and takes place out at Springbank Park. It involves great entertainment like piping bands, highland dancing, stock dog trial demonstration, a Viking massed battle, plus an open tug o’ war competition. There are also heavy events like stone, hammer and caber toss! And of course food, fun and things to buy.

You are welcome to leave when you want. I am planning to stay for a good portion of the day (until 3:30 - 4pm).

Well i'd seen some of these things on TV, but it's another thing to see it up close. Loved the strong man/woman throwing events. (I know Darlene you maybe loved them more ;-)) Was such fun all round, turned out to be a glorious day. Thank you Lorelei for your good care... and terrific again to meet the wonderful and interesting folks that come out to these things.

That was a blast. Thanks huge, Loralei, for facilitating, shepharding the morning wayward shuttle bus groups... (twice!), and for uploading the great pics. Who knew the Viking Exhibition would be one of the most interesting bits to the Scottish Highland Games?

So the forecast looks to be showers in the afternoon. "Cloudy, afternoon showers/thundershowers, 18". So let's give it a try at least for a few hours.

    August 29

    • Rachel

Hi Loralei! Now that the weather's cooperating, I would love to join for my first games, but I work nights, and so meeting at 9:30am is very ambitious for me! I'm planning on being there around noon, would it be ok for me to text your cell so I can hopefully meet up with the group instead of wandering around by my lonesome?

      August 29

    • Justin L.

Rachel ill be there round noon aswell so we can meet up and search for the grp together so we're not both on our lonesome haha. [masked] just txt me when your there and we can meet up :).

      August 30

  • Brittney L.

    August 30

      August 30

  • Alexander J.

The website says that the buses are running on the hour. Is this correct?

    August 29

    • Loralei (.

That's what it looks like now. But that's ok. We meet at 9:30, have 15ins or so to socialize before the bus probably starts loading

      August 29

  • Cheryle

Hi Loralei! I'm closer to Springbank than 69th st. Will take my chances with the parking and meet you there!

    August 29

  • Jennifer B.

Sorry. I'll be out of town for the long weekend. I hope those going have tons of fun!

    August 29

  • Loralei (.

    DArla
I've never brought a chair with me before. I'd rather not have to carry it. Personally I will just prepare to stand if need be. There's so much to see that Iight not sit still anyhow. But it's your choice

    August 29

  • Darla

On the Highland Games site, it mentions bringing a lawnchair as there's limited seating. I've never been to this, should we bring one?

    August 29

  • Justin L.

Are we supposedto grab tickets ahead of time or will there be some available at the park? ?

    August 26

    • Loralei (.

You can buy tickets online or at the gate. They have always had lots available at the gate so I think we are fine to wait until we get there.

      1 · August 29

    • Justin L.

Ok sounds great see you all in the morning :-) I'm excited love scottish games and meeting new people awesome also im really really tall so should be fairly easy to spot hahaha

      1 · August 29

  • Colette

Can we just park at Springbank Park and meet there?

    August 26

    • Gregory Raymond M.

Parking there is a nightmare. The parking lot is usually full before 9:30 or so. It is easier to take the bus. They always charter lots of buses.

      August 26

    • Alexander J.

People usually park on the edge of the main road. It just means you may have to walk a bit to the park.

      August 28

  • Loralei (.

**** busses are only running from the 69 st station NOT crowfoot. That is the last station on the West ctrain line. Please be sure you meet us there at 9:30am!!!!!!

    August 27

  • Loralei (.

Sorry folks. I was offline for awhile after my cellphone took a dive in water! As mentioned, parking at the site is not recommended. If you are meeting us at the site (not at the ctrain) message me and I'll send you my cell no so we can connect. Tickets, as mentioned, at the site or online.

    August 27

  • Diane W

I'm a fairweather spectator so will make my way to the shuttle buses according to the weather. Hopefully I can meet up with the group.

The Calgary Highland Games are August 30, not 31! One Aug. 31 we have the Canmore Highland games.

    June 12

    • Jamie

Loralei, unless they have changed years of logistics, the Canmore Games have always been the next day, the Sunday. I looked at the websites for both & see no changes of tradition.

      June 12

    • Loralei (.

You're right! I emailed them. It's the 30th. Changing the event...
