Brooks Medieval Faire!

**AUG 2 UPDATE - some details added about what to find at the Faire, plus some carpooling info.

IMPORTANT INFO:

Let's meet at Somerset C-Train at 9:30, leave around 9:45 and arrive in Brooks around 11:30.

For those who want to drive themselves there, but still meet up with the group, plan for being at the Badlands Catering booth (burgers, fries, etc.) at 12:00.  I do not have a logo to refer to; I just figured it will be easy to find.
Please note in the comments if you're planning to drive direct, so I have an idea who is going directly there.
I will be wearing a white Stetson cowboy hat (probably the only person there wearing one!) so you can find me.  I figure we will all be hungry then, so might as well try to meet where we can eat.  Look around the immediate area, if there are no places to sit, right there at the booth.

*These sorts of out-of-town meetings are always prone to last-minute issues - traffic, the vendor not being there, other unknowns... so if you don't catch us, try to enjoy yourself anyway!!
You can email me a phone # (click here for link) if you can't find me, or Tweet to @CalgaryDSN .

WHAT:  Let's journey back in time...
Let's visit a time of chivalry, honour & maybe a dragon or two...
Let's get out of town and Do Something New!!

The Brooks Medieval Faire showcase this time from our past, of Knights, Ladies and Jesters.

Jousting, Sword-fighting & more - see the schedule here for more specifics.

WHERE:  Brooks, AB - about 175km (a 2-hr drive) from Calgary - east (& a little south) from the south end of the city.
We will meet at Somerset-Bridlewood C-Train Station (free parking) at 9:30 and carpool from there, to arrive at the site around 11:45, and meet for lunch at 12:00.

Carpooling is never planned much ahead of time; my experience is that at least 2/3 of us are driving to Somerset to meet, so there is never a shortage of cars/drivers.

COST:  $10 admission to the Faire (can be purchased online in advance, but can be purchased on-site) and $1 DSN fee to the DSN Organizer.
Gas costs to & from Brooks is around $40, so offering something to whomever you carpool with, would be a nice gesture.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED YOU BRING CASH IN SMALL BILLS & SOME LOONIES/TWOONIES - so much easier to manage if they don't have credit machines...

PARKING:  Apparently, Brooks is not designed for parking at such an event, so their website details a LOT of choices around the area.  Be courteous, obey the law, don't block any driveways or take business spaces on the street, and be prepared for a walk to the fairgrounds.  You are warned!  :)

FOOD: Available to purchase on-site at various vendors; you CAN bring your own to consume on-site.  *I doubt that alcohol is permitted to be brought in.
We will plan to meet (or re-join if we get separated) at the Badlands Catering booth (burgers, fries, etc.) at 12:00 for lunch.

STUFF:  Various vendors will be there, offering souvenirs & such.

Costumes (of the time) are welcome on visitors, but not necessary.

Great fun meeting everyone. It's so intriguing to me, the romancing of medieval times, what it really would have been like then, and the enjoyment that comes with slipping into a different identity... just leaving the day job and "becoming" a knight. Absolutely fascinating.

Lots of fun. The only comment is that they need to have a larger dinning are with more choices.

I was pleasantly surprised at the scale of the event. It was a lot larger than I'd expected.

Great to see so many new faces; I hope anyone who was there but didn't cross our path, had a good time anyway.

Ill be travelling from the northwest at 8am on the ring road east so ill see you all at the badlands catering booth at 12. The 11 and 3 joust times are the joust times for sunday. Should be a good time.
I can offer early risers in the nw part of town a ride there and back leaving at 8 saturday to save them taking lrt way down south. Call me at[masked] if interested by friday 6pm.

    August 7, 2014

  • Randall (.

Hi. Will be going. Can we leave shawnessy earlier at say 8 as jousting starts at 10 and by the time we park etc.. missing a lot of the morning. Maybe can we have 2 times to meet at lrt station for those wanting to leave earlier?

    August 3, 2014

    • David R

The jousting was one of the things that attracted me to this idea; however, experience tells me that we'd have a very poor showing if we 'only' arranged a carpool as early as 8am.
As much as I'd like to go that early myself, I am thinking of the group as a whole, making better opportunities for those travelling to Somerset by transit.

The jousts are set for 11am and 2:30 (there is a reference to a 3rd at 11:30 & final at 3:00), so the 'main' 9:30 group of us will be able to see (mostly) everything else, and finish our day with the 2:30/3:00 jousting, letting us leave about 3:30 & get back about 5:30 to the C-Train (or, wherever drivers are willing to drop people off; we can discuss options that day).

      August 4, 2014

    • David R

By all means, those who wish to carpool earlier, or just meet out there at 10:30 or so; post your thoughts here - keep in mind that most of us get notifications of any comments here; and the group is public, so any phone #s or emails posted here, are visible to the world. Those who wish to discuss specifics, should email each other & do so offline.

Do you know what time we will be back in Calgary at?

    August 2, 2014

    • David R

If we get started at noon, through 3pm, we should get back by 5:00.

      August 3, 2014

  • Kelly

Unfortunately, I can't make it as I now have to work.

  • Ray

Hi..it's Ray W. here..i don't drive, & coming from Sunnyside NW to join up..from S-Side to Somerset ok, but, from there to Brooks & back the issue..let me know if anyone can carpool the rest..i will financially assist in compensating..! Many thanks..!

    July 21, 2014

    • David R

We'll be meeting at Somerset, to work out a carpool, Ray - typically (and I know it could backfire someday!) about 3/4 of those attending drive & park at the C-Train; there have always been plenty of drivers available. I can take 3 or 4 with me, depending on how friendly the 3 want to get with a 4th...
