Aussie Rules Duelling Pianos with DSN, celebrating 8 years of fun, games & DSN!

AUGUST 18  UPDATE: This evening will be (in part) a fundraiser - you will NOT  be pressured to donate anything (this is first and foremost a fun social outing!), but your DSN loonie (and any other funds donated) will go to ALS research.
I (David R) am participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge (link to Wikipedia explanation) several times this week, as well as this AussieRules evening, to help promote awareness for, and support of, ALS research.  Bring a few more loonies if you want to see me go under the bucket!!
Rather than go into details here, THIS LINK will tell you more about ALS.
I got doused earlier today (I'm the 4th one, in grey) at the Calgary Board of Education, with Richard McBride, a solid DSNer, a good friend, and a growingly-vocal spokesperson for this cause.

AUGUST 11:  This event is a great chance to celebrate 8 years of DSN fun, games & socializing.  Aug 11 is the 8th birthday of the group, so just 10 days later, we will have a great DSN time (as always!!)

AUGUST 10:
Just making sure you understand - you MUST arrive by 7:45 in order to get the DSN VIP package (no cover charge & 1 free drink)!   If you arrive after that, they may not offer you any freebies, so a cover charge will likely apply.
If you can't make it (stuck at work, etc.) please update your RSVP as soon as possible, even if it's just a few hours before the event.
**NOTE: Be sure you look for the DoSomethingNew (DSN) group - there may be other "Meetup" groups there!**

Aussie Rules is always a fun time for DSN - Duelling Pianos is a way to request the oldies & the goodies... and find new favourites!

DSN is happy to offer the VIP Package to its members/guests (thanks to the venue!):
• No Cover Charge!  **But bring a loonie for the DSN fee!**
• One free drink - usually a domestic beer or a highball (hey, it's FREE!)
• A few complimentary nacho plates for the group

You MUST arrive by 7:45 in order to get this benefit!!
The Pianos start playing at 8:00.

Bring your fun side, and leave your inhibitions at the door... getting up & dancing on your chair is not frowned upon here - it's ENCOURAGED!!

There's no single, big group table here - we'll have a section, with a half-dozen or so smaller tables or booths.

If you're new to the group, don't be shy; this is one of the best ways to let your hair down, get loud if you want to sing along, and meet lots of new people!

Lots of parking, and wheelchair-accessible, the building houses Jubilations Dinner Theatre (on the left side) and Aussie Rules Foodhouse & Bar (on the right side).
It's at the NORTH end of the Westbrook Mall.

Walk in the front door, step to the right, gets you into the right place!

They will have a reservation for DoSomethingNew, and I'll have a Meetup sign of some sort (with DSN on it) wherever we set up base camp!

What a fun time at Aussie Rules with the duelling comedian pianos. A blast dancing and singing as well. Thanks David R for organizing. I couldn't stay to see the ice-bucket dump, but I'm sure it was worth watching too.

I uploaded a video of the ice bucket challenge here. It gets cut off abruptly, but most of it is there https://www.flickr.com/photos/121796909@N03/14973225706/

It was a great night to meet new people, dance with friends and have a few drinks. I'm glad we were able to raise so much money for ALS. This was a great turn out! Thanks David for organizing! :D

I want to say how much I appreciate and thank all of you for last night. It was amazing. The problem is that I don't have enough words to really say how I feel. You guys are wonderful, and so was my evening.

Had a blast last night!! Met some lovely ppl, danced & sang along with some fabulously talented pianists AND I got to dump icy cold water on Richard and all for a great cause!!! Can it get any better than that???!!!

Lot of fun, music was great, excellent rendition of "Thunderstruck"! Venue could have used a bit more wait staff but ended up okay. Everyone very friendly and open. Great cause, brave people, should set up a polar bear swim in fall or winter to raise more money.

I've never been to Aussie Rules... it was great fun and everyone (as per every experience I've had since joining a few short weeks ago) is so very open, friendly, and caring. Quality people making a small difference. Gosh those ice buckets looked so cold... burr... here's hoping for breakthroughs in research. Well done everyone... and thank you, thank you.

Your dancing was great yesterday Lissa, and it was encouraging to see people up dancing so much! Haven't heard "gosh ”in a while, very cute :).

Please post your photos from the evening (and the dunking!), and if you have video, let us know where it's been posted.

If you need to email it to someone (i.e. you don't have a social media account to post it to), use the Contact Us button to reach me and we'll figure how how to share it.

Tonight was a great, great success in many different ways... while I didn't even get to thanking Loralei for creating this group 8 years ago and changing so many people's lives for the better, the improptu nature of the fundraising effort for ALS research resounded in the hearts and minds of those attending (including a few from the Jubilations crowd as they left), who dug deep and graciously brought another $747.90 to combat this disease.

I offer a heartful thanks to all who gave, and want to thank those who took part in getting dunked on-the-fly - Loralei, Mike O, Richard himself, and from Aussie Rules, Melissa & _____ (whom I shall have to get a name for tomorrow!).

Thanks to Aussie Rules itself and all the staff, for allowing us to promote this cause, for assisting with the buckets & ice, and allowing us to make fools of ourselves at their front door.

The video that was taken with my phone can be seen on the DSN YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn026NwyOIA

As this Aussie Rules event ALWAYS brings out a lot of people, and a lot of people are commenting; please note that everyone signed up will, by default in their Meetup profile, receive an email notification of comments posted here.

You can turn OFF receiving emails of new comments by clicking the "Notifications" icon below the top comment field (above this comment, but below the event description) and selecting "Don't notify me...".
This will turn off ALL comment notifications in the whole group, though. You can reverse this anytime on any event.

To turn off the red flag at the top-right corner of the Meetup page for various new 'items', go to your profile settings (http://www.meetup.com/CalgaryDoSomethingNew/settings/) and uncheck the appropriate boxes.
Then you'll simply need to read the comments to see if there's anything new (the newest are always at the top of the list).

Welcome to the various new members who are coming out to Do Something New at this event - this is always a great time, and one of the best events to showcase how much fun this group can be!!

Our 'success rate' (if such a thing were really measurable) in getting people out of their shells & exploring their fun side, is close to 100%; and the Duelling Pianos is a great venue to let your wild side out; or to just sit & talk (although it is a quite noisy environment) with a new friend.

As I've always said; in this group, "You come in to meet strangers, but you say goodnight to friends!"

If you want to bring a plus 1 or 2 and have already RSVP'd click on Change RSVP. You will see Just you or bring guests. Then select 1 or 2

George, I've tried multiple times, maybe it's because I'm on my iPhone, but I don't ever get a "Change RSVP" msg & am bringing at least 1 maybe 3. How else can I try to change my RSVP & add my guests?

      July 27

    • David R

Hey, Janice - I don't know what the issue might be; I have an iPhone as well, but as the Organizer, I see slightly different things on the site than members, so I cannot compare. I've tested on the web, though, and +1's are working. I've given you +2 for now - 1 more or less isn't a big deal.

Looking toward to meeting new people

    July 30

  • Megan

    Hi David,
Somehow I got the dates wrong and went to Aussie last night! The piano players were talented, though I was surprised that you had to tip them $20 to get a song request played. (they only play requests) I tried a $5 tip but they didn't play my song. I was also surprised that a burger and side ceasar was $20.
Anyway, I won't be able to make the Aug.21 date :(

    July 25

    • David R

I'm sorry you were disappointed with the place, Megan - it's certainly not typical for a 'required' tip to play a request; if it was very busy, I could understand them taking the better money, though. It's regularly among the 4/5-star rated places around town, and the Pianos are certainly the main draw.

The menu seems on par with most places like this on price; but when you're with a big, fun group of like-minded people, one usually doesn't worry if it's a couple of bucks more than one would typically spend - it's a great group social event. At least, when the group goes together, we usually get the VIP package as it will be on Aug 21, so that brings the cost down a bit...

      Maybe next time!

      July 25

  • Karyn

thanks operating off my cell and technology challenged. what is the cost as I also can not view this pl.

    July 24

    • David R

Hey, Karyn - there's no cover charge, and one free drink included. Anything else you eat & drink is your cost (plus $1 for our Meetup group fee!)

      July 24

  • Tyson B.

Can't really say no considering as a Jubes employee I get staff discount at Aussies. Look forward to seeing and meeting people!
