Monthly Libertarian Speaking Event

  • Jan 9, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This month our friend Bill Ketcheson will give a presentation called: "Are Markets Being Rigged Against Us?"

Every day, trillions of dollars are exchanged on trading floors around the world. This takes place in something we abstractly think of as "the market," but whenever somebody buys a barrel of oil, a shipment of potash, a Royal Bank share or a Japanese yen, there is a real person behind the transaction. The market system works when people are confident the same rules apply to everyone. But more and more we hear stories of powerful institutions cheating the system for their own gain.

As central banks continue their money printing policies, are they being caught in a Catch-22 of needing to perpetually feed the banks new money to keep public markets afloat? Are the banks, in their pursuit of greater returns for shareholders, using cash injections to enhance economic growth? Or are they using these funds to simply benefit themselves?

This presentation will discuss some research that shows how the big banks, along with the central banks, are creating scenarios where the real winner is the banks themselves and the loser is the general public. From insider trading to reallocation of funds to interest rate fixing, we will explore some areas where markets are being manipulated and how a libertarian should think about it.

During the follow-up discussion we can focus on ways in which this situation impacts the real economy, including you and me -- and what we can do about it. It is certain that we will also debate the nature of market manipulation and what that means for free-market libertarians.

It's going to be controversial and interesting, so don't miss it!

Hi All,

We are holding a regular speaking / lecture event each month at the Danish Canadian Club.

This will be an open event and each month someone new will give a lecture to the group on a variety of issues of interest to libertarian-minded folks.

Anyone can give a lecture to the group we just need to know ahead of time for scheduling.

This is a public event, so bring your friends if you think they would be interested.

Format: Presentation or lecture w/ Q&A and Discussion

We are currently holding the lecture nights at the Danish Canadian Club. It is conveniently located downtown, actually rather close to the Blind Monk. There is easy parking on the street and at the venue.

The DCC has pretty good food, so if you're hungry and need dinner you can order some eats there. Maybe enjoy a beer or a glass of wine as well!

I'd like to learn more and become more involved in a group like this but the lack of other women in the group is a bit intimidating.

Hi Jessica, actually believe it or not... there are some women in our group! Many have only been to a few events overall, but Michelle and Kathy come to a lot of events, Bonnie used to come every time but her and Wes have been really busy... I guess even my girlfriend's been to a couple beer & wing nights at Blind Monk too! You can't really judge by the RSVP

... err judge by the RSVP's because about half usually don't come and a bunch of other people who don't RSVP show up instead. But anyway, yeah most libertarians are dudes but we know some cool libertarian women as well! I'll try and find out if any are coming to DCC tomorrow.
