Iva Bell Backpacking (2 nights)

Iva Bell is an awesome hot spring destination, but the easiest way in is still 13 miles!

We will be starting early from Red's Meadow (Fish Creek Trailhead, (also known as Rainbow Falls Trailhead), and hiking all the way to the springs the first day (Friday), so you must be in very good shape with at least one backpack trip under your belt already this year.
This trip is contingent on the road to Red's Meadow being open. Because of the early start, you must drive up the day before (camping at the trailhead should be ok).  We'll be spending 2  nights there, hiking out and driving home on the last day (Sunday)

**UPDATE**  May 5th:  Got the permit for Friday to Sunday, which means everyone needs to drive up on Thursday.  13 miles with a full pack is a lot, so please email me (or answer the rsvp question) indicating your backpacking experience and fitness level.

The group size will be limited to 9 people (that's the limit on the permit)

I assume everyone is already at the trail head, so I don't know if anyone will get this, but I will be leaving Davis in another 45min and arrive...around midnight, which is not unusual for me.

I have a 2 person tent if anyone wants to share. Also, if anyone would like to join me in a food group, keep me posted. I am happy to confirm some recipes and do the shopping and just split up the money later. Also, I own a pot, stove, and fuel so it is super easy! Please just reply here or email at [masked] to coordinate.

Just want to remind everyone that even though bear canisters are required along the route we are taking, they are NOT required at Iva Bell, so as long as we don't camp in between, we don't need them..:-)

Are you/is anyone planning on bringing a bear bag to throw in a tree? If not, are there bear lockers that anyone knows of where we will be camping??

      June 9

    • Stu G

You should bring some cord to hang your food bag from a tree. Lockers at the trailhead only.

Weather calls for 38 at night, which I kind of doubt, but you should probably bring warm layers for evening.

Will there be some sort of thread to arrange group gear and logistics? I have lots of group gear I am happy to bring but don't want to duplicate unnecessary items. Also, how are we going to arrange food or are we just doing our own thing?

    June 5

    • Stu G

Feel free to make suggestions. Certainly, we don't need to bring 9 stoves. I will be sharing gear with Katie. Perhaps carpoolers should think about sharing. I know Norm will bring his gravity feed water filter, and I've drunk the creek water unfiltered with no problem.

About the food. I suggest doing your own thing unless you decide to team up. Certainly, anyone who wants to bring food to share with the group will be appreciated..:-)

Hi campers I will be bringing my gravity filter and everyone is welcome to use it. I will also be bringing my stove if others could bring some fuel canisters that would be great. Please bring your own pots to cook with.
I will be coming out of Clearlake if anyone would like to carpool. I'm thinking of leaving Thursday morning early.

It's fine if you arrive at the trailhead late. Ideally, you'd get there before dark, since it's easier to find your way around. But just remember it's at the very end of the road, veering right at the last fork.

Getting closer! I stopped by Mammoth yesterday to scope out the logistics. We will be driving in just before they start their summer traffic regulations, so we will be ok driving down to our trailhead anytime on Thursday. But we are only allowed to park overnight at one spot which is about a mile from the trailhead. Not a big deal, but I want to make sure everyone finds it. I will have specific directions later, but wanted an idea of when people thought they would get to Mammoth on Thursday the 12th.

Sounds like an amazing trip, hope I get on the list!

I'm really excited to go. What is the water situation, is the water in the creek drinkable? Are people bringing tents, or sleeping on tarps? I've done both.

      May 5

    • Stu G

I consider the creek water to be pretty pristine, but if you are worried, you know what to do. I bring an extra light tent, but I suppose out under the stars could totally work in June..:-)
