North Fork American River Swim & Scramble Day Hike

Near Colfax, this is commonly known as the Chamberlain Falls class IV river run for kayaking and rafting.

In the summer with low water, it transforms into one of the best places to swim in the area. A steep sided canyon with clear green water, deep pools, lots of granite to climb on and jump off of.

We'll park at the bridge and hike down river as far as we want, swim, snorkel, sunbathe, lunch, etc.

The trail is rocky, and there will be places where we scramble over boulders or just swim down the river a bit.  Good swimming skills are needed for this, and good shoes for a rocky trail, maybe even shoes you can get wet.

Meet in Auburn for directions and carpooling.

Stu, you rock brother! I had a great time rock scramble and swimming in the water holes. The river was unbelievably clear and perfect temperature to be in the water all day. I will bring what you suggest to bring. I am already trying to gear up for the next trip. Thanks Stu!

Limited parking at Iowa Hill Crossing, and it's state park, so $10 parking fee or pass required. Hopefully, there can be some carpooling from Auburn.

There will be some free parking along the side of the road, with a 1/4 mile walk down to our trailhead.

This adventure reminds me of a time I went canyoning in Switzerland. Can't wait!

Seems there is a lot of BLM land along that stretch of the river. Just wondering...are there skinny-dipping opportunities?
