Tuesday Games with a Latin Flair

  • Feb 19, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Please join us for our next gaming event! We will be trying a fairly new restaurant, A Taste of Latin. I ate lunch there recently, and met the owners. They are very excited to have us. To check out their menu, use the link provided in message board discussion under "Making Moves Since 2008".

The games we play are much different than the board games you played growi ng up. Some of them will give your brain a very satisfying workout due to the high level of strategy and low amount of luck. Others are totally dripping with theme (pirates, zombies, monsters, etc) that involve more luck and direct player conflict.

We have a growing collection of games on hand, but if you have a new (or old) boardgame you think fits the bill, by all means bring it along (as long as you'll teach us)!

So... let's have some fun rolling dice, placing tiles, or drawing cards - and enjoy some face-to-face interaction! It really isn't about whether you win or lose (at least not entirely). It is about having a great evening, trying to win some of the time, and always playing better the next time! smile

Just to be clear: we don't play Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Uno, Yahtzee, etc. Please see our About Us page for more information on the types of games we play.

Mansions of Madness in my opinion is one of those games best played with a group of people that play together consistently (Like a D&D group) with each person alternating rolls of Keeper and Investigator. Much like with Arkham Horror the Investigators have a greater chance of losing than winning, combine that with an experienced Keeper and novice investigators that result is compounded. MoM is a game you play and learn from and then try again, but if you don't play it often you're never going to get to a level as an investigator you will ever win. On top of that the set up takes awhile and the puzzles as well as play make it a marathon style game, not always suited for a restaurant game night. The game is also piece heavy and makes for a lot to keep up with. I would rather play Arkham than Mansions because all players work together, that said, I still don't think it's a great game for a restaurant game night.

The comment was meant as sort of a review of the game itself. I would like to play again as the Keeper. A novice keeper may give the investigators half a chance. That said, I also want to play some other games like Water Deep (?) and Revolution again.

It was well lit, we had plenty of room and privacy. The food was good and inexpensive and there is plenty of parking space.

I feel exactly the same as Jeff.

4 out of 5 stars. The good: big room to accommodate us and food was tasty and inexpensive. The bad: distance to location from my home.

I will be teaching Mansions of Madness tonight. I plan to go ahead and pick the story and try to set it up beforehand. It plays up to 5, counting the "keeper"(which will be me for this game). It is set in the same world as Arkham Horror, which is based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft.

Prez Con. Won the first heat of Power Grid and automatically advance to the semis, so it's been pretty exciting so far.
