December 2013 CamoSMM

Our next CamoSMM (Camosun Social Media Meetup) is set for Tuesday, December 17th, 2013 from 7-8:30pm at the Lansdowne Campus. We'll continue our exploration and sharing of social networking.

Voting for a Meetup topic seems to be popular, so please leave your comments to vote for the topic you would like to see us cover at this Meetup! What do you want to learn next? Clarke Wright will lead this session.

At the last Meetup it was put out there that we should look at Instagram. How to use this platform to promote your business, projects, organizations and ideas. And how to link this ever popular Social Media platform to other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and Foursquare, to make relevant multiple updates to your Social Media accounts all at once.

So please let us know if you'd like to take a look at Instagram with us, or let us know if you have any other ideas for this Meetup.

As before, there is no charge to attend this Camosun College Meetup we just ask that you please RSVP to reserve your spot.

In the meantime stay in touch with us & feel free to ask general Social Media questions here in the Meetup group or on Twitter: http://twitter.com/camosmm. You can also follow us on the CamoSMM RebelMouse page: http://www.rebelmouse.com/camosmm. If you have enjoyed meetups so far, please share this group with your friends and encourage them to join us!

Just found this MOZ blog on "Building SEO-Focused Pages to Serve Topics & People Rather than Keywords & Rankings." Looks/sounds good. It's about a shift away from key words/key phrases as such. http://moz.com/blog/topics-people-over-keywords-rankings-whiteboard-friday

Clarke's insight into Pinterest was amazing -- the ability to post to other social networks from it is so powerful! Happy holidays to everyone!

Thank you Stuart. I wish there had been more time to look at Pinterest a bit closer, but hopefully the time we spent on Instagram as well, will get you started. Happy Holidays! See you in the New Year!

It looks like it has now been decided, we will go through an overview of the picture-based platforms Instagram and Pinterest in tandem. We'll see you tomorrow night for the next CamoSMM!

Thanks Jeannine, we just tweeted your link. It's a really good recap of what's happening in Social Media. Thank you for sharing it! When you ask, what do we think of it, do you mean the part about Instagram Direct? If yes, it feels like a response by Instagram to the recent push in popularity of Snapchat. Time will tell if this kind of direct communication will be popular across more SM platforms, or whether it is specific to certain SM networks. How do the rest of you feel about this type of communication where you send your updates to one person or a group pf people, but those updates are not publicly viewable?

So far Instagram and Pinterest are pretty much #neckandneck. We could look at a comparison between the two. Show Pros and Cons of using these visual/picture based Social Media platforms. :) How does everyone feel about that?

    3 · December 11, 2013

    • Jeannine P.

That sounds like a good idea - since they are considered to be "pic" based platforms comparing the two would be most excellent for me!

  • Brian C.

I vote for Instagram but would be happy to hear about how it should be used compared to Pinterest.

Great article - thank you for sharing Bryan! I still haven't had a chance to watch your video yet - hoping to do that over the break. I want to learn more about the conferencing software you use too - would you be able to share the links for both? Thank you!

Pinterest or instagram are fine. What I would find of great value is ways to maximize one's website for SEO. What suggestions are there that could apply to most websites in terms of what to do, SEO-wise? Also, in what order is best to do those things? (Did that make sense?!)

    2 · December 5, 2013

    • JUHLi S.

That makes sense Ramona - maybe we could do a session on basic SEO (search engine optimization = get found in Google & other search engines) in the new year : )

I am leaning towards Pinterest as I just love it but learning about Instagram is good too!
