Jan 13 meetup:
Format for this week's meetup is as follows:
7:15 EVOLUTION of dogs
-power point presentation
-Q & A
*** WE WILL NOT BE WORKING DOGS THIS NIGHT***
On evenings when theory presentations are held, we request that dogs stay at their homes until the next meetup.
Canadian Canine Trainer's Group meetup for January will be an excellent introduction to the evolution of dogs from wolves and how us humans have modified our lifestyles to accommodate these incredible creatures.
With these realizations, we can learn to adjust our environments appropriately so that our canine companions have the most comfortable and successful relationship with us. Knowing the history and evolution of the dog and each breed type, helps us in our selection of the right breed for each family's lifestyle, and selection of the correct training tools for the best results.
As we learn about the genetic predispositions of each breed type, we begin to understand why certain behaviours in particular breeds are more challenging to suppress with standard training techniques. Hopefully, with this new awareness, each canine-human "team" will be encouraged to find the appropriate exercises for their dogs and have a healthier relationship and understanding of each other.
Following weeks will include a focus on training tools and protocols to follow. The biggest fad in dog training this decade is the use of the Clicker through operant conditioning. A complete series will be dedicated to the CORRECT use and application of the clicker, and MORE IMPORTANTLY: how to get rid of it! Too many trainers end up having a clicker in their pocket FOREVER, and we understand that the goal is to get a TRAINED dog, not have a dog that is in TRAINING forever. (although we recognize that they never quit learning.)
Alternatively, individuals who are not interested in operant conditioning and clicker training, we will offer other topics such as:
-FIXED ACTION PATTERNS,
-PUNISHMENT (how to use and NOT abuse, as presented and published to D.I.N.G.O. , Japan)
-MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP SKILLS
-DOMINANCE: does it really exist?
-PACK OR POSER?: why dogs are NOT considered true pack animals (science says so!)
If you are a dog enthusiast, this is the group for you! There will certainly be a topic of interest at one of our meetups... watch our aganeda for weekly updates.
DOGS ARE WELCOME WITH PROOF OF CURRENT VACCINATIONS... remember, sessions are more geared towards training the human end of the leash while giving assignments to work on at home.
