Ice Bubbles on Abraham Lake and Nordegg in February

Alright! Let's head to the Nordegg area this winter for some sunrises/sunsets on Abraham Lake which.. should have some frozen bubbles in it.

We'll be staying at the HI Shunda Creek Hostel. All members are responsible for reserving their own bed at the hostel. The total cost for the two nights' stay there will be $54 per person (slightly more if you're not an HI member). Please call the hostel directly at[masked] to make a reservation (and do mention that you're with the 'Canadian Rockies Photo-Hikers group so they can keep us together).

You can get more information about the hostel at their website:

http://www.hihostels.ca/westernCanada/1384/HI-Nordegg,_Shunda_Creek_Hostel.hostel

Once your bed is reserved, please do post a comment on this event's page and let us know that you've reserved a bed. As well, if you end up cancelling your reservation with the hostel then do update your RSVP here as well.

Itinerary:
Friday, 21st February: Arrive at the hostel. Put our things down. Depending on when we arrive we may try some photography that night.

Saturday, 22nd February: Wake up early to catch the sunrise at 7:41am. We'll actually get to the Abraham Lake site by 7am to find a good spot and wait for some good sunrise colours. After that we can go for breakfast and to warm up. :) Then we can go for a hike somewhere (to be finalized later). We can then catch the sunset at 6:11pm.

Sunday: Similar wake up schedule as Saturday's. We can then decide if we want to do a short hike before heading back home.

For some photography ideas for Abraham Lake, check out this link: http://www.oopoomoo.com/2013/07/bubbles-and-lace-winter-in-the-canadian-rockies-photo-workshop/

As is the case for any outdoor activity in the Alberta winter, please dress accordingly. Please check the CRPH hiking checklist available in the files section for some ideas.

Since this event will involve walking on ice I will highly recommend using ice-grips or spikes on your hiking boots. I personally use Kahtoola Microspikes and find them quite useful. Although Yaktrax are nice, they may not provide as much traction as Microspikes (or similar grips). Please consult with your local outdoors store for recommendations and prices.

Transportation/carpooling:
To be finalized closer to the date of the event. Please do leave a comment on the event's page if you do require a ride or are willing on giving one.

*Please note that this is no longer a long-weekend trip. It's just a standard weekend (leave on Friday and return on Sunday) trip. I will be putting up a second trip to here on a different weekend if you're unable to make it to this one.

*Also, please note that this event may be cancelled or postponed in case of inclement weather or other issues. If this event does need to be cancelled or postponed, people who have RSVP'ed will be contacted directly.

BY ATTENDING THIS EVENT YOU (AND ANY GUESTS) ARE ACCEPTING (AND HOLDING YOURSELF RESPONSIBLE FOR) ANY RISKS THAT PERFORMING THIS TYPE OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITY COMES WITH, HOWEVER UNLIKELY. YOUR EVENT COORDINATOR WILL DO THEIR BEST TO PROVIDE GUIDANCE AND CARE TO ATTENDEES BUT CAN NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE, LOSS OR INJURY THAT MAY OCCUR WHILE ON THIS TRIP.

    February 25, 2014

    • Imran H.

Hmmm. It's pretty good about size limits. Are you uploading jpegs?

Anyone else having problems uploading photos? Have tried twice, and it keeps on telling me my photos are being processed, try again in a few minutes. That was 20 minutes ago!

      Me three. :(

Looks like our photos are there now, although I had to delete some of mine, since they got uploaded twice.

It's too bad that I have to withdraw from the trip this time. Enjoy.

    February 20, 2014

  • Imran H.

Alright guys! Looks like we're getting close to go-time. :) Just a quick reminder.. if you aren't coming to Nordegg this weekend then please update your RSVP on the event's page so I know how many people to expect.

Will be posting a rough schedule of events here soon as well. Do let me know if you have any suggestions for what we can try while there. Sunrises (and perhaps even sunsets) on Abraham Lake should be good! The ice looks good enough for walking about on. As for the actual bubbles.. hmm.. we may be lucky to spot some but sadly this winter has not produced adequate conditions for them. Should still be an awesome trip though. :)

    1 · February 18, 2014

    • Imran H.

Sounds good! Just an update to this: Just got some information on hikes to try in the area. "Coliseum is good to go without snow shoes, Vision quest, tough puff, windy point ridge, Siffluer falls. The area hasn't had snow for a while, so as long as we stay out of the deep stuff and north facing (perpetually shaded) aspects we should be good."

      February 20, 2014

    • Lina A.

Also dont forget we will spot Preachers Point and Kootenay Plains areas.

      February 20, 2014

  • Stan L.

Did Coliseum last year would like to return.
How about Abraham in the morning, Colesium
later and maybe Siffleur on Sunday morning.

  • Natalie

What is happening for meals? Are we each bringing our own stuff or are we planning potluck-style?

    February 15, 2014

    • Imran H.

Oh, that's news to me. Is anyone interested in a potluck? The kitchen at the hostel is more than adequate to make any meals desired. Potluck planning takes some time and energy. I would just be happy with making my own meals unless there is enough demand for a potluck.

      February 19, 2014

    • Imran H.

Just an update, re: local eateries. The hotel in Nordegg has a trucker-style restaurant attached that is still open. We could certainly go there for a meal on Saturday night! Can discuss this once there.

      1 · February 20, 2014

  • Natalie

I have come down with a cold and don't want to risk getting any more ill this weekend. I've cancelled my reservation. Hopefully I can make it next time

    February 20, 2014

  • Imran H.

Alright everyone, I should be able to make it to the hostel by 6pm. I'm assuming most of us should be there by 9pm tomorrow (Friday)? How about we meet up in the downstairs sitting area (by the fireplace) at 9pm? We can then do some introductions and come up with a good plan for what we want to see and do (according to everyone's preferences).

    February 20, 2014

  • Imran H.

    Weather forecast for the weekend:
Friday night will be partly cloudy. Overnight low of -17.
Saturday will be cloudy with some flurries. High -13. Overnight -22.
Sunday will be sunny. High of -16.

Again, please dress appropriately for the weather!

Hmmm. I may be able to bring my telescope for Saturday night if it does indeed get clear. I may be able to drive out to the Highway 93 junction and do some astrophotography before 3am when the moon rises.

    February 20, 2014

  • Lynne

I was starting to think about food for the trip too. Has anyone stayed here before? How equipped is the kitchen? Do we need to bring pots, dishes, cutlery, etc.? My guess is breakfast and lunch done individually and perhaps some pot luck for dinner? I'm open.

    February 15, 2014

    • Imran H.

I wasn't expecting us to worry about a potluck. Probably just easiest if we all just bring enough food for ourselves for the weekend. Some (or all) of us can also eat at the local eateries. Perhaps for Saturday dinner? Totally up to everyone attending and their preferences. We can all get together at the hostel on Friday night (9pm?) and plan it out!

      1 · February 18, 2014

    • Michael C.

If you do a Google search for "Nordegg restaurants", only one place shows up - and it's only open from May to September!

      February 18, 2014

  • Michael C.

Looks like I'll be driving after all. I can provide a ride to 2 people. I would like to try to leave the city around 3 pm (or earlier if possible) so that we're arriving at Shunda Creek while it's still light out.

      February 18, 2014

So I just booked as well, almost forgot about the bubbles. I am leaving from Ponoka and have room in my car. I do not have snow shoes unfortunately, are we going snow shoeing in the afternoon?? If yes I will try and rent some.

    1 · February 15, 2014

    • Imran H.

I will bring my snowshoes. If you have them, bring them. If not, we will try to do trails which aren't horribly snowy so you should be alright without them.

    February 7, 2014

  • Michael C.

If some of us want to do some snowshoeing, I took a look at my David Thompson Hiking guide, and there are two waterfalls (Whitegoat and Tershishner) that would be easy and fun trails to consider. Both are more or less accessible from highway 11 and are short (2.5 KM round trip).

Lenora, thx for your offer but I cannot leave early. I will try to find a ride from someone else.

      February 3, 2014

    • Danny C.

Can anybody give me a ride in the south side at around 3:00pm on Feb 21?

      February 3, 2014

  • Danny C.

I live in south end and I need a ride too. Can anyone fit me in? Meeting in century park would be good. Thy.

    January 29, 2014

  • Michael C.

Although it's still a few weeks away, can we get a more definitive list of who is driving and who needs a ride? My trusty Subaru Outback is getting old, so I would prefer to catch a ride with someone. Given that it's approximately a 3 hour drive to the Nordegg area, it would be nice to leave a bit earlier in the afternoon, but of course that depends on whether or not people can leave work early on that Friday.

    January 27, 2014

    • Ivan L.

      Hi Mike
I'll be taking, Lina and Ester in my Jeep. Sorry I just have enough room for the two with gear. Good luck finding a ride!!

      January 28, 2014

  • Imran H.

Wow. I have to admit, this doesn't seem like the best year for the bubbles. I'm getting reports from the area saying that the ice isn't very clear this year. Hmmm.

    January 16, 2014

    • Lina A.

We can take a drive to the Icefields Parkway area and start tour. If okay with you or anyone else i don't see why not? Would like to visit a frozen falls (Cline River Canyon), Hoodoo Creek Bay & Cave (not sure if we can do a Hoodoo hike in winter - 3km?).

      January 17, 2014

    • Michael C.

I think even without the bubbles, Abraham Lake at sunrise would be very nice!

      January 27, 2014

  • Imran H.

Trying to determine what to do on that Saturday afternoon. If we go for a hike we may need snowshoes. (Unless someone knows of some cool hikes around Nordegg that wouldn't require snowshoes?)

If we do make it into a snowshoe hike, would anyone not be able to come along for it? (If you don't have snowshoes you can certainly rent them for the weekend from MEC or Totem Outfitters etc.)

I have reserved a bed for myself. However, I may have to cancel later if I find someone to go ski with me in Revolstoke that same weekend. Revy is my all time favorite ski place and MagicBus only goes there once per season. What the odds !!

    November 12, 2013

  • Imran H.

Hmmm. The Shunda Creek site isn't allowing us to book beds currently. Not sure if it's perhaps too long before the date to do so or if there is some technical fault. Awaiting response from the hostel about this. Stay tuned.

    November 12, 2013

    • Imran H.

Okay. The hostel isn't sure of why the Website isn't letting people book for that weekend because currently it's quite empty for that one. Sooo... the workaround for that is, please call the hostel directly at[masked] and book your bed that way. Please let them know that you're with the 'Canadian Rockies Photo-Hikers' so they can keep us all as close together in the dorm as possible.

      November 12, 2013

  • Brian P.

HI Imran, are we going to do our own hostel booking?

    November 12, 2013

    • Imran H.

Yes. Sorry, just updated this event. I'm trying out this way this time: Let's just get all attendees to book their own beds (and they can even book separate accommodations too if desired).

      November 12, 2013

  • Imran H.

Sorry guys, I had to move this to the weekend after the long weekend. I hope it's still good for everyone.
