This should be different! ;)
Let's head to Jasper. Rent some canoes and canoe the 13Km down the eastern shore of Maligne Lake to Fisherman's Bay backcountry campground. We can use this as a base for some sunrise photography of Spirit Island on the lake. We can also do some hiking in the area and some fishing too.
Friday, 11th July: Drive out of Edmonton early so we can get to Jasper by 2pm. We'll pickup the canoe lock key, PFDs, paddles, etc. at On-line Sport in Jasper town. Then we'll drive to the shore of Maligne Lake to get to our canoe. We'll get there by 3pm, put our tent, sleeping bags etc. into the canoe and start paddling. It's a 13Km paddle to Fisherman's Bay campground on the east shore of the lake. It should take us 3-4 hours to get to it. We should thus get there by 7pm. We will setup our tents there and maybe make some dinner. (We may just head out to Spirit Island for some sunset photography too?) Then, we settle down for the night. We can also make a campfire and roast some marshmallows while we watch the millions of stars!
Saturday, 12th July: We wake up early to paddle back out to Spirit Island (just south of our campground) to photograph sunrise there at 5:41am. Once we've had our fill of photographs, we'll paddle back to the campground for breakfast/brunch (even before the tourist boat to the island starts running. We can then go for some hiking. (Exact hiking plan TBA) We can also do some fishing if we bring some fishing gear and.. a mountain fishing licence.
Sunday, 13th July: We again wake up early to paddle back out to Spirit Island to photograph sunrise there. then back to the campground for breakfast/brunch. We can then take down the tent and paddle back to the shore. Once we return the key etc. to On-Line Sport, we can then do a short hike somewhere in Jasper. Then.. we drive back to Edmonton, reaching it by 7pm.
We will have three (3) tent sites at the campground. We can have one tent on each site, to a maximum of six people. Yes, this means that we will have two people sharing each tent. Attendees should be okay with that.
The backcountry campground permit for the three tent sites is here. I will bring a copy with me to affix at the campground as well.
To sign up for a tent space in someone's tent, or to offer space in your tent, use the spreadsheet for this event.
On Saturday mid-morning we will paddle farther down to the south end of Maligne Lake. From there we can check out the Coronet Creek campground and even try the Coronet Creek/Glacier hike - or at least some of it. On Sunday late morning we can also try a short hike near Maligne Lake.
Canoes will cost $75 per day each (or $50 for half a day). So that will be $175 for the weekend (as long as we pick it up at 3pm or after on the Friday and return it by 1:30pm on the Sunday). Since each carries two people, that will be $88 per person for the canoe for the weekend. If you have your own canoe or are renting one somewhere else and driving it over to the lake then that's fine. Please let me know in that case and you can just pay for the camping spot.
Please use the spreadsheet for this event to enter your canoe option.
We are booking three (3) backcountry camping sites here. Each site can have one tent on it. The cost for the three sites for the two nights comes to $129.30. So each of the six attendees must pay $21.55 for the camping spot cost for the weekend.
All RSVP'ed members will be contacted to pay me (Imran) their camping spot cost. If they want me to book a canoe through on-line sport as well, then they must pay me for that too. I will contact each attendee to settle the amount owing.
We can certainly carpool to Jasper and back. Check the spreadsheet for this event to sign up for carpool or to give someone a ride!
For this event, please be comfortable in water. Some previous paddling (canoe/kayak/dragon boat/etc.) experience is recommended. Please also be okay with sharing a tent with someone. There is a very basic outhouse at the campground, although there are actual toilet facilities at Spirit Island.

Please check the 'More -> Files' menu/section on the CRPH Meetup site for checklists and the standard event attendee waiver (which you will be asked to sign on Friday afternoon when we meet up on the lake shore).
*Please note that this event may be cancelled or postponed in case of inclement weather or other issues. If this event does need to be cancelled or postponed, people who have RSVP'ed will be contacted directly.
