In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson

This meetings selection is from our new book list and is:

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson.

A little about the book:
""Berlin, 1933. William E. Dodd, a mild-mannered academic from Chicago, becomes America's first ambassador to Hitler's Germany, where he is about to witness a turning point in history. Dodd and his family observe firsthand the many changes -- some subtle, some disturbing, and some horrifically violent -- that signal Hitler's consolidation of power. The ambassador has little choice but to associate with key figures in the Nazi party, and his increasingly concerned cables make little impact on an indifferent US State Department. Meanwhile, his daughter, Martha, is drawn to the young men of the Third Reich and their vision of a 'New Germany', and has a succession of affairs with senior party players, including the first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. As the year darkens, the Dodds find their lives transformed, and any last illusions they might have about Hitler are shattered. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the times, and with brilliant portraits of Hitler, Goebbels, Göring, Himmler, and others, Erik Larson's extraordinary book sheds unique light on events as they unfold, resulting in an unforgettable, addictively readable work of narrative history"--Provided by publisher."

Hey everyone. We are only just over the attendee limit. I also note that Julian has indicated in the comments a no show but is still on the attendees list which means there is one spot available for someone leaving just 3 over the 20 limit. I put the limit on the size to ensure we have a cohesive discussion group and that we can find a table at Tilley's to fit us. Given the normal attrition rate that we get at the meetings compared to the RSVP list I am fairly certain we can accommodate the 3 members over, so if you can still make it come along - no one will be 'voted off the island'.

As we seem to be getting some popular meetings happening (I note the next one is currently full), I will look at scheduling at perhaps scheduling a second meeting the following week for the same book to take the overflow should we go over the 20 spots. This way hopefully the group size may normalize naturally and we get two moderate size groups as opposed to one massive and one small sized group.

I am also on the waiting list. Although my lower self debated turning up anyway I will not do this out of respect for Daryl and the book group. I very much enjoy the book group and it deserves to have breathing space which is being insured by imposing a number limit.

Ok, my last post ran out of characters. What I was going to finish up with is if anyone has any suggestions to handle the large sized groups, happy to take ideas (and possibly put them to a poll if we get lots).

I am making this up as I go generally myself, so........

This seems a hard book to find. Does anyone know of a bookshop who has it in stock?
