'Mobile technology for people who are blind' presentation

Have you ever wondered how a person who is blind uses their mobile phone?

We have two lovely guest speakers for our next Canberra Web Accessibility Inclusive Design meetup - Cameron Roles and Carla Nolten - who will answer this question.

Carla and Cameron will deliver a short presentation focusing on mobile technology for totally blind users of iOS. The topics covered will include:

• What is Voiceover

• How easy is Voiceover to learn and what resources are available for users/developers

• A demonstration of Voiceover in action on an iPhone and iPad

• Accessibility of apps and mobile websites

• What problems are created by inaccessible aps and mobile websites

• Highlight apps which are accessible and easy to use

About our speakers

Cameron Roles is a totally blind lecturer at the ANU College of Law, teaching torts and workplace law. He loves technology, particularly mobile technology, and the opportunities it creates for blind and vision impaired people to operate on an equal footing with their sighted counterparts. Cameron uses Windows, OSx and iOS daily, and is an experienced JAWS and Voiceover user.

Carla Nolten is an Adaptive Technology Consultant with Vision Australia, Australia’s leading blindness and low vision organisation, and is based in Canberra. Carla is a strong advocate for accessibility, including accessible apps and accessible web design, and she loves mobile technology. She is excited to see mainstream (mobile) technology becoming more and more accessible, in addition to the specialised Adaptive Technology solutions available.

Please note that we are in the process of confirming a venue. We are aiming to hold it somewhere central. This invite will be updated with the venue details.

Thank you for organising this, and to Cameron for taking the time to demonstrate the usefulness of these technologies. I thought the OCR box being set up and used pretty awesome.

Very informative demo and discussion. Highlights: usefulness of navigation by screen location, and the large vocab of gestures used with Voiceover. Had the feel of a magic show when Cameron demo-ed Scanbox and Prizmo!
