  • Meet at Namadgi NP Visitor Centre

    Naas Road, Via Tharwa (map)

    -35.518845 149.069336

  • Bimberi is ACT's highest peak. I've never been there.

We will meet at the the visitor centre and depart at 0830 for a 0900 start at Orroral car park on Saturday morning and walk to set up a base camp near Cotter Hut ready for a day walk up Bimberi on Saturday then walk out on Monday.

The walk will be on officially maintained tracks to Murrays Gap, 3km from the summit. After that there is an unofficial foot pad.

We can expect night time temperatures down to below 10 and day time temperatures about 25 but there is a lot of variation possible

You need to be fit to do this. If you can climb Mount Tennant then be capable of another walk in the afternoon, you are probably ready. The proposed walk will be long but nothing steeper than Mount Tennant. On Saturday and Monday you could have to carry a pack weighing at least 10kg, assuming that you are wearing your fleece and waterproof jacket.

For safety, groups must keep together on this walk.

I am happy to discuss the proposal. Erick[masked]

Sadly, I will not be going. I had to leave for England at short notice.

Unless someone volunteers to lead this within the next few days, I will cancel it.

I have changed the meeting time to 0900. That's when the Visitor Centre opens. I need to collect a PLB and a camping permit.

I think it's going to be too hot for me to do a 50km walk. Hope you have a good time.

Hi Erick. Interested in doing this walk with you. Any extra information I might need to know? Cheers

It will be tough. We will cover 50km and climb 2,000m over the 3 days. And you need to be comfortable walking the trail with a pack with camping gear and provisions for 3 days.

It will not be a fast walk. We will all stick together at whatever pace everyone can manage.

There are more details of the three fact-finding walks in our past walks section:

    Hey Erick,

That is disappointing for you but I am selfishly happy as I am keen to do this walk and will look forward to doing this another time...:)

Erick - did you say there would be a pool/creek up there where we can swim? It's going to hot and muggy and it would be nice to cool off.

    December 2

    • Erick

We will be camped 100m from the Cotter. There will be plenty of water but I do not think there will be any pool to swim. Sitting in the water and splashing to cool down is probably all we can do.

      December 2

    • Erick

It's only likely to be hot on Friday. 29 in town so, perhaps, 25 at the camp site and cooling down rapidly by the time we arrive.

  • Tess

I'm sorry but due to family problems I'm going to have to cancel..:(

It could be cold, wet and windy on Bimberi. Please be ready for this. I suggest full leg covering, fleece, beanie and waterproofs.

On Bimberi, temperatures wil be much lower than in Canberra because of altitude. As a comparison, Charlottes Pass only reached 23 on Sunday 23/11 while Tuggeranong reached 37.

A greater temperature risk is for the walks on Friday and Sunday with packs. We would be starting on Friday at the day's maximum and uphill. On Sunday we would be finishing a few degrees below the day's maximum and downhill. And these temperatures would probable be only a few degrees below the city mamimum temperatures.

I suggest that we should not do the planned walk if the predicted Tuggeranong temperature on either of those days is 32 or over and should do something else achievable and enjoyable in such conditions.

I've booked the afternoon off work (as I couldn't get to Orroral by 5pm otherwise). Happy to start earlier if others want to.

I am not keen to be setting up in the dark. I have cleared my diary for the Friday after lunch, and would like to start early enough to avoid that. If we could get a group together that could start no later than 3pm, that would be great.

This will be a tough walk. Much tougher than anything we have attempted. We will walk over 50km and climb 2,300m. Over half of this will be carrying camping gear. Please only come if you're ready for this. Start time is 1700 and it's an hour's drive from the city so if you're working that day you'll need to leave early. We have 4-6 hours of walking on Friday so will finish and pitch camp in the dark under a full moon. I did this recently to be sure it would be OK. There are details in 'Bimberi Wilderness Fact Finding' in our Recent Meetups list.

If we split to a fast and less fast group on the Friday walk I am able to start the less fast group earlier if everybody is available. Otherwise we just finish very late. That's fine by me too.

Thanks for this info Erick. I might need to rethink this walk myself.

Don't think I'm fit enough for this one, but it does sound like it would be a good time. Perhaps another time, when I've had more practice.

Hey there I was thinking of doing this same walk, with an extension to old fields hut, maybe two nights on the sep/ oct long weekend. . .

    August 17

    • Erick

Using a long weekend was tempting but the conditions would make the walk more difficult. We'd need more gear so heavier packs and snow on the ridge would make progress difficult. I want the walk to be as inclusive as possible and it is inevitably too difficult for some group members, even in December.

    Ohh keen on this
