In honor of Father's Day, you can bring your Dad along for free! (If you plan to bring your Dad, you don't need to RSVP or pay for him, just let me know by commenting below or emailing me, so I'll know how many people to expect.)
***If you're not attending, you don't need to RSVP as "not attending". You only need to RSVP as "not attending" if you have signed up for the hike and then cancel.***
Interested in getting into hiking with your dog, but not sure if your dog is ready for the mileage of our regular hikes? Then Starter Hikes are for you!
Starter Hikes are 1-2 miles in length and designed for people and dogs wanting to begin hiking with us but not ready yet to tackle a regular 4-5 mile hike. By doing a number of shorter hikes, your dog can build up his/her mileage gradually, and eventually be ready for longer hikes. Because these are shorter hikes, the charge will be $5 per person. (Starter Hikes are also great for older dogs or puppies who aren't up for the higher mileage - or for humans who aren't up for the mileage or more rugged trails.)
Our second Starter Hike will be a portion of the flood wall trail. If you haven't hiked the flood wall, you've missed out on some of the best views of the city. Join me and Garth on this short (about 2 miles) but beautiful hike. The gravel trail is wide and level, so it's perfect for beginners, older dogs, little dogs, or anyone interested in an easy, low-mileage hike with spectacular views. There are some stairs about halfway and a short, shallow slope on our return, but no hills, narrow poison-ivy-lined trails, wet rocks, or rocky slopes to scramble up and down. (There may be a mud puddle or two, however, after all the rain we've had.) We're starting early to take advantage of the coolest part of the day since there isn't much shade on this hike and no river access for the dogs to get in the water.
Questions? Email me through Meetup or post your question in the comments.
(Although this hike is for friendly dogs, please keep in mind that even friendly dogs can have space issues, so when we're waiting, please don't let your dog greet another dog without first asking the owner's permission, and be careful with snout-to-snout greetings.) Flexi-leashes are discouraged because they can easily get tangled and cause injury when hiking with a large group of dogs.
We are thrilled that folks are enthusiastic about joining us on our hikes! Please understand that we can only accommodate a certain number of folks and pups on a given hike. Our group sizes are limited to ensure that we can effectively manage each group. You are welcome to RSVP with a guest (or two), but if the hike is filled up, please respect our limitations. There are more hikes on the way, you won't be left out!
DIRECTIONS: Meet on the street behind the Suntrust buildings off of Semmes Ave. If you're going south on the Manchester Bridge (9th street), take the first right off Semmes on an un-marked street next to a big blue sign in the grass that says "Suntrust Mortgages". 12th street is the second right, so take a right on 12th if you miss the first right. The street where we park is called Railroad Avenue on the map, but the street sign said Riverview Avenue, so don't let that throw you off. Mapquest isn't very clear so look for the Suntrust buildings and and look for my car (old gold CRV) parked on Railroad (AKA Riverview) Avenue behind Suntrust.
