Scheaffer Island Swim Club Hike

Weston is excited to be back on the trail and has suggested that since the water level is low enough, we need to make a trip over to Scheaffer Island! This is a great secluded spot for clear water swimming so bring your long lead so your dog can enjoy some water time before the summer is over!

This is a starter hike and we will cover about 2.5 miles. While it is shorter in length, it is high on adventure! We will meet at Forest Hill Park and head out to the back of Belle Isle and straight down to the river. We will jump the rocks that lead us over to the hidden island. The rocks are close together for easy stepping but we will teamwork and help grab leashes so everyone crosses safely. Once on the island, people can determine how far out on the river they want to go to let their dogs swim around. We will spend about 20 minutes there playing and enjoying each others company.

Once the dogs are good and wet, we will jump back on the fire road and head back to Forest Hill Park and up the eastern trail to our cars.

Please wear trail shoes that you don't mind getting wet - no flip flops. The hike will be on-leash, but if conditions permit, dogs with good recall may be able to go off-leash for swim breaks.  If you have a long leash, you may want to bring it for the water breaks, but no flexi-leashes and no leashes that attach to your body.

IMPORTANT:  Please review our page on General Hike Information before you RSVP (http://www.meetup.com/CanineAdventure/pages/General_Information_for_All_Hikes/).  This will ensure that you're ready to attend one of our hikes!

Great fun. The girls & I looked and smelled like we had participated in a mud run.

It was wonderful seeing you- it has been too long! Ruby and Willow got the hang of rock hopping and did great out there! Hope their leashes dried out! :)

I loaded a couple of pix here; poor iPhone quality as darkness was falling but still fun memories!

Russ and I had a great time with our two Labs, JD and Brubeck. This is their 2nd Canine Adventure and we were very proud of their good behavior. They especially enjoyed swimming. Janice was a great hike leader and Weston was a great companion for the group!

Dudley said that was one of the best hikes ever! It was great to see such a great turnout of dogs and owners and to have you and Weston back out on the trails :)

Thank you everyone for coming out tonight! It was a beautiful evening on the water and I hope everyone had fun and some adventure jumping the rocks. Sorry the darkness caught up with us at the end- but I think we did ok getting back with the street lights. Sorry my camera went haywire so I didn't get as many shots as I wanted- but I got some rock ones with my phone. It was great seeing everyone! Thank you to all of our canine friends for coming tonight: Guru, Choco, Enzo, Ruby, Willow, Ella, Winston, YaYa, JD, Brubeck, Dudley, Sallie, Sophie, Ellie, and Weston. See you on your next hike!

I agree with Paige...it sure does sound like fun, but I already have another obligation for that night. :( Maybe you will do it again soon? (hint hint) :)

Sounds fun but we have obedience training that night.

Please do it again, maybe on a Saturday morning!

You bet, Paige! As long as the water level stays low, we can get to the island. I will try to do another one soon!

Janice - look forward to seeing you. I'm bringing both my girls & will likely need help handling them on the rocks. Hope that's not too much to assume?

Mary!! I can't wait to see Ruby and Willow! And, yes, Weston and I scouted the rocks out and honestly they are pretty easy b/c the water level is low. There is only one that is smaller in size so I plan on taking leashes to get the dog over first and then the human. It will be a fun adventure!!
