Hiking season is upon us! Cooler temps mean we can do more challenging hikes, and the western half of the Buttermilk is one of the hilliest trails in the city. Add the eastern half of Buttermilk, and you've got a great workout!
We'll begin at the Reedy Creek parking lot & tackle the western Buttermilk while we're all still fresh, then hike down to the river for a water break under the Boulevard Bridge. We'll follow the access road to the 42nd street stairs, then take the Buttermilk back to the parking lot. We'll then tackle the less challenging eastern half of the Buttermilk, then cross over the footbridge for a break on the rocks south of Belle Isle before heading back on the access road.
This hike will be 5-6 miles with lots of hills at the beginning, and is for experienced hikers who like to hike at a pretty good pace and want a good workout for themselves and their dogs. We'll be on a trail about 75% of the time, and on access roads the rest. Dogs will remain on leash, but there may be an opportunity for brief off leash playtime at the water stops if conditions permit.
Please email Rebecca through meetup if you have a question, or post your question below.
Please wear appropriate trail shoes that you don't mind getting wet. The hike will be on-leash, but if conditions permit, dogs with good recall may be able to go off-leash for swim breaks. If you have a long leash, you may want to bring it for the water breaks, but no flexi-leashes and no leashes that attach to your body. Bring water for you and your dogs. You and your dog may get wet and/or muddy.
(Although this hike is for friendly dogs, please keep in mind that even friendly dogs can have space issues, so when we're waiting, please don't let your dog greet another dog without first asking the owner's permission, and be careful with snout-to-snout greetings.)
We are thrilled that folks are enthusiastic about joining us on our hikes! Please understand that we can only accommodate a certain number of folks and pups on a given hike. Our group sizes are limited to ensure that we can effectively manage each group. You are welcome to RSVP with a guest (or two), but if the hike is filled up, please respect our limitations. There are more hikes on the way, you won't be left out!
IMPORTANT: Please review our page on General Hike Information before you RSVP (http://www.meetup.com/CanineAdventure/pages/General_Information_for_All_Hikes/). This will ensure that you're ready to attend one of our hikes!
The parking lot at Reedy Creek can get crowded, but there's usually space along Hillcrest or Riverside. Park where you can find a space and meet in the Reedy Creek parking lot.
We're looking forward to another fun hike!
