We are interested in starting a makerspace on Cape Cod. What is a makerspace? A makerspace is a collaborative learning environment that allows members to work on projects related to science, technology, art, and design. Here is the Wikipedia definition. How would it operate? We envision that our makerspace will be community-driven and membership will be open to everybody. Members will be able to share equipment and tools, take classes, and exchange ideas. Membership and workshop fees will cover the costs associated with overhead, equipment, events, and classes. Why Cape Cod? There is an enormous amount of artistic and technical talent on Cape Cod. Also, there are many people who like to learn new things and improve themselves. We believe that these qualities, combined with the current popularity of the D.I.Y. movement, would support a makerspace similar to those found throughout the world. (www.hackerspaces.org) A makerspace will be a way to promote science and technology education, allow members to share tools and equipment that would otherwise be too costly for individuals to purchase, and potentially serve as a business incubator.
