Active and Passive Information Gathering

The largest success factor for cyber attacks is possessing detailed information about the target. It is essential that the ethical hacker understand these strategies, so we’ll devote this meeting to learning more about performing active and passive information gathering (footprinting, competitive intelligence, and reconnaissance). There will be a lab session for this class. The online URL for this meeting is: http://adobechats.adobeconnect.com/capsec2014jan/

I have kali and a windows vm will that be all i need?

    January 15, 2014

  • Amir A.

Okay I just read the comment Kelly posted up. I have a workstation with Kali on it thats all I will need correct?

    January 15, 2014

    • Alfred

There has always been a bootable USB with either Kali or Backtrack on it. PC's are provided. The files necessary to complete the lab have been on the USB stick. Make sure to be on time or slightly early as the number of PCs are limited.

      January 15, 2014

    • Kelly B.

Kali has the tools we will be using the lab. Dan also said it would helpful to have a windows machine to use the tools against. For the lab we have a windows VM that we will use as a target machine.

If I dont make it out there. What do I need at home to be prepared for this meet. Is it only lecture or also hands on lab?

    January 15, 2014

    • Alfred

Lab equipment has always been supplied in the past.

Can I use RedHat Linux platform for the lab?

    January 14, 2014

    • Kelly B.

Yes. Some of the lab uses on-line resources. Other parts use some specific tools. The easiest way to get them is the get a copy of Backtrack or Kali which are available for download as virtual machines.

    Will Attend online.

    • Kelly B.

Yes, the session will be recorded.

How much prior experience does the lab assume? I am a data scientist with Audax Health so I have a fair bit of experience with command line scripting/data analysis/etc but this is my first Cyber Meetup. Is there anything I should learn beforehand? Thanks!

    January 14, 2014

    • Kelly B.

The labs are presented at an introductory level, so you do not need prior experience.

      January 14, 2014

  • Nuno S.

    I will attend online.

For the online participants, we will be using a web browser for many of the lab exercises, so you can do them from home. Other tools that we'll be using are nslookup, dig, nmap, traceroute, wget, zenmap, p0f, xprobe2. These tools are all cross-platform and can be downloaded off the web, or they come standard with BackTrack or Kali Linux. To get the most out of the labs, it would help to have another PC or a virtual machine in your home network that you can use the tools against.

We have limited space in our meeting room. We are trying to improve the online experience for participants, so online participation is encouraged. You'll be able to follow the presentation material online, and the lab exercises will be shown also. The majority of the lab exercises can be done from home with and internet connection.

So, just to confirm- there are devices already available for attendees at this event? I would like to know so I can know how to better prepare for this event.

    January 11, 2014

    • Dan K.

You don't have to bring anything to the group. We have 18 PC's available in our meeting area for participants to use, and attendees usually double-up on them. We do, however, have limited space in our facility.

      January 11, 2014

Can't get there, but want to dial in. Good luck getting the audio improved from the last meeting. If you could post the software/configuration details so that we can follow along at home would be fantastic. Thanks

What tools will be used in the lab? Are there any services to register for (to make this smoother)?

    December 26, 2013

    • Dan K.

Each pc console runs BackTrack 5 base Linux OS, with Oracle VirtualBox and an XP VM. For the upcoming session, nothing needs to be registered.

Along similar lines as shawn wilson - Last event's lab (first I attended) there were 2-3 computers without USB sticks (containing the distro). Can't seem to find a link to that event's distro image, so just wondering if this won't be the case for the above event, or if the image can be made available for the members to use on their own USB sticks (actually - either at the event, or remote; the latter of which makes me presume I am missing the image download somewhere)?

    December 26, 2013

    • Dan K.

We intend to have all 18 pc consoles working for this upcoming user group session. Kelly Brown will have to respond to you regarding access to the image. We will have the presentation slides and labs available online.

Awesome topic! I am *really* excited about this event! :)
