Take Back Our Guinness Record...One Square Mile of Hope

  • September 13 · 8:00 AM
  • Fourth Lake

Two organizations finalized an agreement to partner on an effort to regain the Guinness Book of World Records for the “Largest raft of canoes and kayaks”. The date for this event will be September 13th 2014. Both groups are excited to be working together on what we hope to be a record setting community event.

Not only are we participating, we will are part of their special recognition for groups. We will also be setting up as vendors displaying our group's interests in health, safety, clean waterways (Riverkeeper).

We realize that not everyone will be arriving at the same time, but I do strongly suggest (but not necessary) that you be at the main event site by 8 or 9am if you have to still sign in.

Some of us will be camping at Eighth Lake Campground.

If you have not registered yet, you need to do that asap to ensure that you are put in our launch group.

Go to the following link to register:

http://onesquaremileofhope.org/index.html

Waiver Form at the following link.

http://onesquaremileofhope.org/images/forms/One_Square_Mile_of_Hope_2014_Waiver_Form.pdf

After registering, make sure you contact the GROUP organizer to tell them that you are with us and want to launch with us.

[masked]

The following is a link to the schedule of activities, on and off the water. Although the actual rafting/launching of boats is not until 11am, you cannot officially be part of that unless you have registered, signed in and received your launch assignment and participant number. The best idea is to arrive the day before to assure that that is all done but it not necessary...I can check you in if you get me your signed waiver form.

We will have a table/tent setup in the event area.... a good place to meet other members of our group or leave messages for others. Most of us are planning on grabbing a sub after the event and meeting near our tent.

There will also be a buffet lunch put on by the organizers after the main event with a suggested donation of $8. I am thinking there will be a contingency of us camping the night before and maybe that night as well.

That was my impression from what I was told....hehe...but things do go over my head especially when I am overwhelmed. That is when team work and a little help from friends makes everything easier.

We'll, it certainly worked out fine nothing like sharing organized chaos with 3000 or so close friends.

Thanks to all of you that participated and helped make the event and the entire weekend successful as well of tons of fun in spite of the weather! Special thanks for being patient when things did not go as planned. It was an honor for me to be part of something that raised awareness and support for those affected by breast cancer/any cancer along with the amazing feat of Inlet for organizing that many kayakers for the Guinness World record. The camping facet was yet another challenge but WELL worth it and shows the dedication by you. I am grateful for each and EVERY ONE OF YOU!! My personal thanks from the bottom of my heart!

Are we going to wear something and/or decorate our boats to show our group affiliation?
My sister Teresa is coming from Virginia to participate. We're going to camp Friday-Sunday, probably in the Plains. Maybe hike our boats into Hellbender Pond to see if the bull moose is still around.

At the encouragement of Sharon, our fearless leader, I have decided to camp out this weekend at the event. The last time I went camping was with my son, now 26, when he was a cub scout. I'm not sure how I will do, but if someone finds me in the wilderness, cold and confused, please call the Holiday Inn and tell them to come get me. Thanks.

According to the website, when you check in you get your launch site assignment. You can check in on Friday from 8 AM to 10 at the Onfo center at Arrowhead Park. Check in includes turning in your waiver, getting t-shirt and lunch tickets (if you ordered lunch) and getting launch assignment. Be sure to tell them you are with Capital District Kayakers. Lots of info at their website about parking etc.

If you change your mind about camping, we have some room at the campground. In actuality, you need very little. I have a spare tent...all you need is an inflatable mattress and a sleeping bag.

Hi Sharon - I will be registering tonight and will be coming up either friday around 7pm or early saturday. Might camp sat night as well. Will look for you guys at 8th lake. Would you be able to include me in the group check in on Friday or do you need my waiver for that? Sue

    September 8

    • Mary

I was wondering this too. I'll be staying at 7th Lake. Where do we meet?

      September 8

    • Sharon

When I know where we are launching, I will let you know. Even for those not launching with us, you can look for the Big Bobber on the back of my boat. See picture above.

      September 9

  • Sharon

For some reason, we do not get our launch site until I check us in on Friday. Obviously, it will be from some position on the lake. Last time, we launched our group early and hung out on the lake and went on shore to the main event site...easier to get around in our boats than a car. Your car can remain at that launch spot all day. I will send out an email and a message about the location here in the comments as soon as I know. If they have your registration or you give me the information for your waiver, I will include you in the group check-in on Friday.

    September 9

  • Sharon

There is still some room for others to camp at Eighth Lake so post your needs here in the comments.

    September 8

  • Sharon

Cannot mail, fax or scan waivers. You must bring them or get them to me beforehand so I can check all of us in at once.

Email or text me if you want ME to hand in your waiver. 269-7970

The event organizers will be transmitting updates and instructions during the event on FRS Channel 1. If you have a walkie-talkie that can receive FRS, you can listen to the updates.
Most newer hand held walkie talkies can receive FRS channels 1-8. Check your equipment to make sure.
