Kayak with the Manatees in Crystal River, Florida

It's happening! We are set to paddle in the town of Crystal River, winter home of manatees.

I will be in Florida for a couple weeks before our MAIN EVENT on March 29th in Crystal River. If anyone else is in that area just before, be aware there will at least one other paddling event in the Crystal River area.

We have an exact location for our launch and kayak rentals at Manatee Tour and Dive.  http://www.manateetouranddive.com/index.html

We have a special group rate of $30 per kayak rental but keep in mind that these are sit-on top kayaks. They also have snorkeling tours, airboat tours and swim with the manatees tours. We will be getting there late in the manatee season so hopefully there are still some hanging around.

When you get a chance,  take a look at this recommended video on youtube about paddling with the  manatees.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnD9u85nUlQ

Let everyone know where you are staying, where you are eating, beaching, camping, hoteling, etc. This is going to be sooooo much fun!

I don't think we will have to transport any kayaks.

    March 16, 2014

  • Terri

Would the rental place be transporting the kayaks to the launch location? I'll be driving a rental car without a rack.

    March 15, 2014

  • Nanci L.

By the end of March there will be very few manatees left in Kings Bay depending on the weather. They will be
few and far in between if it warms up early, but you may still be able to locate a few of them. There still may
be some restricted areas in place, as The Fish and Wildlife Service will remove the restricted areas depending
on how many manatees are still in Kings Bay and what the weather is doing.

    March 15, 2014

  • Nanci L.

This was the suggestion of a Crystal River kayak supplier...FYI

It would take you about 4-5 hours to paddle the entire Kings Bay area, which would include Three
Sisters Spring area . Picnic lunches can be eaten at Hunter Springs City Park or Kings Bay City
Park. I do have a local cafe that can fix a picnic lunch (nice bag lunch) for your group and have it
delivered to one of the parks at a designated time. If you are interested in that let me know and I
will get a menu and pricing for you. Either Kings Bay Park or Hunter Springs park can be used as a launch point free of charge. The Kings
Bay paddle is a very beginner friendly trip.

Hey folks, Alan Mapes and I will (tentatively) be in that area around the time of the meetup. We have paddled that area a lot over the past 4-5 years and can recommend some good paddling areas (and pubs)
In addition to the Crystal River Preserve (aardvark kayaks is also a good shop to rent from), consider paddling the Homosassas River for a less crowded manatee/dolphin experience.
If you are a bit more adventurous, there is a great 3 or 4 island paddle in Cedar Key with beautiful sand beaches on all the islands. It would be about a 10+ mile round trip depending on what islands you visit. In calm conditions, it is a nice trip for novices, but there is some open water.
The Chassahowizka "the Chaz" River is scenic and full of wildlife. Or go to Ozello Point for a nice paddle on the Gulf in shallow, warm water.
If we meet up down there, we will be happy to show you around.

So many places to pick from...who woulda thunk it there in Crystal River. Let us know which one would be best so I can secure the time and place....a place that rents and has a good launch for a group....maybe a campground nearby. Didn't you guys camp at the spot you paddled in? Wasn't the swim with the manatees in the same spot?

So do you think the best dates to book flights going down would be for the week leading into the weekend of the 29th?

    January 14, 2014

Yes! There will be other opportunities to meet up before the 29th.

      January 31, 2014

I am interested in some sort of carpool and up for the keys also. I will be home from Costa Rica in February and can meet and discuss.

I just booked a SW flight for a couple days before ( the 27th) for $149 each way. I fly to Tampa every 3 mo, and that's about as low as it gets these days. I will be in the Tampa area March 27th to April 9th...if anyone is passing thru the Tampa area we could meet up for lunch, dinner or another kayak outing!

I also belong to the local (Tampa) kayak meetup group and will let everyone know if something pops up through them.

I will be in Orlando beforehand but plan to come to the West coast on the 27th or 28th to check stuff out...will keep you posted.

I'll be starting to firm things up with plans for this event and events leading up to it in Florida. My home base will be in Orlando however I will wandering all around the state. I am planning on doing a dinner at Margaritaville in Orlando one evening. Another event will be at a beach for sure. Hoping to have something to go on by end of next week. Love all the suggestions...keep em comin...and add suggestions for other outings as well.

SW flights out of Albany down to $300 RT! Nancy, if the date of this trip is set, this would be the best time to book...

Sharon, check out the Kayak and Walk meetup out of Nokomis (near Sarasota) Florida, led by Joyce. We've been on trips with her there and Cape Cod, where she has a similar group during the summer.

Not yet sure when the Geezers will be in Florida, as Geezer Mike is gimping around on crutches after some foot surgery. Last April we had about 20 manatees in the spring on Easter morning - spectacular! I think the name of our launch spot is Hunter Spring Park. Be prepared for a crowd of swimmers atThree Sisters Spring. Explore other places around Kings Bay and you should find more manatees and perhaps dolphins. We will join in if possible.

    December 10, 2013

  • Sharon

I will probably be in Florida for a week or two before this event...wandering around aimlessly....Yankee training, Seven Mile Bridge in Key West, relative and friend visits...I hope if anyone else is there that we can post some other paddles....Alan, Jim, Gail, Nanci, Marci, Kathy, Ed?

Is there going to be any attempt to co-ordinate travel and accommodations, or will we all be on our on? And no I will NOT be bringing a penguin. But, I am hoping to kayak when we are in the Antarctic in late January.

    1 · December 6, 2013

Are you really going to the Antarctic? If so, I'm jealous :) have a great trip n take lots of pictures to post n tease :)

      December 6, 2013

  • Nanci L.

I am planning to be in the Tampa area the last week in March. If there is really interest in kayaking with the manatees I can get some info to pass on. I have been here before - the kayaking is awesome and the water shallow and clear. Crystal River is about
1 1/2 hours north of Tampa and just a little further from Orlando. It is on the West Coast of FL. We rented kayaks here a couple years ago. There are probably lots of places to rent...and I will check them out. You would be on your own for transportation to FL, your own lodging and kayak rental. I will set up a place where we can all rent our kayaks.

If in Jan, we'd have to be *home* in NY again by the 18th of Jan. If in March, my college-son has from March 22-30. I'd sooo love if this could work somehow....

      December 3, 2013

  • Anna T.

Sorry for silly questions....do we drive there with kayaks, or will there be kayaks available there? Can we get a group discount on flying do you think? What are travel-thoughts on getting there? Once I figure that out.....our family might be IN. My housemate is a college professor and one son is in college, one in high school. So that will be how the dates play into things for us all~

    thanks~!!!
