Stockport Flats-Swimming/Picnic on Hudson River Island.

  • July 19 · 10:00 AM

This is just a short, scenic ride down Route 9J to Station Road which is just North of Hudson. Station Road is on the right, about 1-2 miles past where Route 9 and 9J merge. Follow Station Road all the way to the end.

We've gone here several times in the past and it's got something for everyone.

We usually start with a short paddle up the creek to the Stockport Bridge....some of us have been known to take a dip there.

We will then head out to the Island out in the Hudson to set up our picnics on the State owned picnic areas. Bring your lunch, and if you want, something to share.

I will be at the launch site around 9am as I paddles out to the island last night and found a picnic spot.

Lots of parking. High tide is at 9:30am so we should be fine...only possible difficulity would be if you stay out on the river close to low tide as the launch site could be mud. Some people may wish to go back to the launch earlier than others so let's try to paddle the channel to and from the island with at least one buddy.

Some people may choose to camp on the island as well....let others know.

This was an awesome adventure from start to finish..Stockport Creek up to the falls, the tiny side creek, circling the island where we saw lots of birds including a mother eagle and her babies...that was a real paddle stopper. We finally got to our perfect picnic spot that Karen and I carefully picked out the night before. We enjoyed a nice long picnic and chats. Some braved the water for a swim and 2 stayed to camp overnight. The low tide made our return trip tricky...walking our boats part of the way and maneuvering the tiny muddy channel of water at takeout. Team work made the whole day a unique and fun adventure!

Had to miss this paddle because I was working - can't wait to attend the LLBean paddle posted for Stockport Creek!

This event could not have gone any better. Nice paddle up Stockport Creek, a side adventure into the swamp creek, circled Middle Ground where we saw lots of heron and eagles, and then had a nice picnic lunch on one of the beaches. Takeout was a little tricky with low tide...we actually had to walk our boats part of the way!

aproximately how many hours before we get back out to our cars. I have something going on late afternoon, want to make sure I can get back to my car on time, if needed. Never been there so I dont know the layout.

We will take about an hour to go up and back the creek before heading out to the island. My guess is that we will be at the island at noon...how long you stay there is your choice. It's less than a half hour to the island picnic area...maybe more if we don't get one of the closer spots. You can see the island from the launch.

I have a 14' ride on top kayak and a 9.5' sit in which kayak should I bring?

There are waves, motor boats, barges, which would suggest using a protective stable craft.

Sounds like fun. This will be my first official outing with the group. Took the Rescue course. That was great and made me feel much better about going in the river.

Hi, This sounds like a another good paddle opportunity.
I'd like to attend and was wondering since it's in July do the participants get a reminder email ?
I'd put it on my calendar anyway.
I never been in the river or any river with the Olde Town Vapor.
Anyone know about the Vapor's capabilities as far the Hudson River is concerned ?
    Thanks for any advice.
When I lived in Jersey City NJ occasionally a friend and myself would canoe in NY Harbor and paddle to Battery Park etc and beach the canoe at the Statue of Liberty and sit on the sandy side for a while. That was in my a lot younger riskier day's

You will always be reminded of events that you sign up for unless you did not click on that setting. Not sure what size boat you are talking about...wouldn't recommend going out in the river with something less than a 12ft but I am sure some people have. Depends on water conditions and your abilities.

If it was the same boat you used in the harbor you will be fine.
