Provide kayak support for the Lake George Open Water Swim 7am August 23

Kayakers are needed to patrol the perimeter around the swimmers who will be racing 2.5 k (one loop) 5k (2 loops) and 10k (4 loops) of a course identified by buoys in the bay starting at Hague's town beach. Kayakers will need to stay aware of swimmers and warn away any crafts that may be entering the area. Hague FD, Lake George Coast Guard Aux and the Warren County Sheriff’s Department are providing motorcraft support to the swimmers and kayakers. You may be on the water up to four hours but water/refreshments will be sent around and you can be relieved temporarily if you need a restroom break. Please wear clothing suitable for being on the water on a hot day with the sun coming down. Hats, lotion, shirts, sunglasses, etc. There will be a meeting of the kayak supporters at 7:20 am with the races beginning at 7:45 am. Information about the event and how to sign up to volunteer (and give your size for a free t-shirt!) can be found at www.lakegeorgeswims.com Not only do you get to spend a morning on lovely Lake George, you will have already secured a great parking space for an afternoon of paddling the northern end of Lake George.

good point Sharon - not only is the event in the early morning when the water is usually calm, it is held in a protected bay.
Here is more info: The volunteer pre-race safety meeting will be at 7:15am at Hague Public beach. There will be a pop up tent with a sign that says "Volunteers" where you can gather. Kayakers'll pick up:

    whistle
    noodle
    map/instructions

Those kayakers positioned at turn buoys will be issued radios. The swims will last from 7:45a till around 11:30a. So that you're not on the water the whole time there will be shifts where you'll be on the water for 90 minutes, then rotate in for a 15 (or so) minute break before going back out again. A map of the swim course is available at http://www.lakegeorgeswim.com/the-swims/. Kayakers and boats will be stationed in zones around the perimeter. Kayakers will need to stay close to the course to keep an eye on swimmers.

I am sorry to miss this event that I have attended for the past three years. Basically all you have to do is float around and provide support to swimmers. It takes place on a breathtaking spot on Lake George...a protected area that is not rough waters.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
