Stars For Our Troops! Potluck social. Brunswick Fire Dept location.

There is a group of volunteers that is continuing what was started by a group of ladies in Florida called the Star Project about 2005. See "Star Project Begins".

http://www.starsforourtroops.org/

Susan Wells, a member of our group, is the President of the local effort...Stars For Our Troops... and had suggested that we become active in this mission. We did, and we will continue to be.

There are two locations for us to participate...Brunswick Fire Dept and Gettysburg Flags in E. Greenbush. We will post both days.

We will be at the Brunswick Fire Dept on the second Tuesday of each month and Gettysburg Flag Works on the third Monday of each month.

What we do is start with a very informal potluck dinner. While snacking on our dinners we participate in cutting stars off of retired flags and put them in tiny little bags with an inspirational message...these tiny bags are given to our troops overseas and retired veterans. The following is a more indepth description.

We cut the fields of blue, known as the canton, from these old flags, then scissor off the embroidered stars.

Into a plastic bag go one of those stars and given to a soldier or veteran with the following message:

"I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A.  I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder thatYou are not forgotten."

If you have a flag that you want to donate, they should be approximately 5 feet by 3 feet, so that the embroidered stars are about the size of half-dollars.

Collectors of flags in the Albany, NY area include: Gettysburg Flag Works, East Greenbush; Saratoga Flag, Gansevoort;  your local Kiwanis Club or to Advanced Hearing Aid Centers, Colonie. Remnants of flags will be properly retired as noted in Flag Etiquette.

They are accepting names and addresses of soldiers currently serving, so they can receive their Stars. Include your name and address and we will send you a Star.

If you have a flag or want to make a donation to help her cover postage and packaging, bring that with you.

This is a great project...especially for the holidays! Let's do it!

New Capital District Volunteer policy: If you rsvp for  meetups and are a no show two times, your name will be removed from the group. You can choose to reapply in three months. I must enforce this policy to build and maintain a credible and reliable group of volunteers. The agencies and venues that we volunteer at count on us to show up for jobs that they assign us.

More info about this project is at StarsForOurTroops.org and you can like me and Stars For Our Troops on facebook.

2 Bags of Stars are sent to currently serving soldiers, so bring in names and addresses. Let them see the great work you are doing to honor them.

Had a question- I know it starts at 6 pm but I am not done at work until 7 and would like to attend to help. If I wasn't able to get there until after 7 would it still be ok?

I would suggest that everyone bring their own drink just to simplify that part.

I am glad to see that many of my regulars are going even though I cannot...you know I would if I could. Ron, you don't necessarily have to feed everyone...just something to share. Could be simple or extravagant. It's fun to see what shows up...a surprise meal...could be all desserts. I find it fun to see.
