Volunteer at the Food Bank Warehouse-March

We are welcome, reliable and trusted volunteer helpers at the Food Bank and we are on their schedule every month. This month we will be working  the 6:30-8:30 shift as usual. This is a very fun as well as rewarding opportunity. Don't worry if you think you won't be able to keep up...no one will be judging how hard or long you work...breaks are fine.

We normally meet up for coffee or dinner at the Route 7 Diner beforehand...around 5:15-5:30....let me know if you plan on coming there so I can secure a big enough table!

If the list fills up, make sure you get on the waiting list because the list changes a LOT and we want to make sure we have a full group. They really need a solid commitment of numbers.

If you cannot make it, PLEASE make sure you take your name off the RSVP as soon as you can, even if there is not a waiting list. The Food Bank needs to know how many are coming and I would like to assure them that the head count I give them is how many show up.

From this point forward, if you are a no show to two volunteer meetups, you will be removed from the group and will have to rejoin in three months. I am sorry for this new policy but it is the only way to build and maintain a trustworthy and credible group of volunteers.

No flip-flops, slippers or sandals, please.ALSO, leave all purses and backpacks in your vehicle.

The work in the warehouse consists of the sorting and repacking of non food items, as well as some food items like cookies and produce, etc.  Most of the volunteer work takes place in the warehouse, sorting and repacking items for distribution to our member agencies. The work can be dirty at times, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting soiled and dress in layers to stay warm in the warehouse.

Remember, this work can be tortuous...all those desserts to drool over. OK...the steaks too for you meat lovers!

All ages are welcome in the warehouse, however those under 14 or 15 years old must be accompanied by adults.

REMEMBER-Join the waiting lists so we have backup!

About the Food Bank of Northeastern NY.

The Regional Food Bank has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. It is the only organization of its kind in northeastern New York. The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies serving hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties. From Plattsburgh to Newburgh, in urban, rural, and suburban communities, the Food Bank provides over 20 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies.

The mission of the Regional Food Bank is to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste.  We work toward this mission by ensuring that all products available for donation reach the Food Bank and are distributed judiciously to our member agencies; by practicing responsible stewardship; and by actively participating in the community to increase awareness of hunger and poverty.

The Regional Food Bank is a non-profit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Hi there everyone. Each month, we help at the Warehouse and the issue of cateogories becomes confusing and takes up a lot of time. I thought I would create a definitive list of categories and what goes in what category. I would then run it by the Food Bank Folks for their okey-dokey, and it would then be availble for use for our group and other groups. So, please take a moment abnd email me items that you sorted at the event last night, and let me know the category it was assigned to. This is especially so for pantry type items, condiments, baking items, and the more confusing items.

This should make things go much smoother in the future, especially for new volunteers. Thanks.

By the way, the other reason I'm doing this is in hopes that Sharon will stick a gold star on my forehead showing I cooperate and play well with others.
