Stars For Our Troops! Gettyburg Flag Works

Stars for our Troops - Thanking those that served or are serving.

This a group of volunteers that are enjoying each other as they share the love of their country and the Armed Forces of this great country.

Website: http://www.starsforourtroops.org/

Susan Wells, a member of our group, is the President of Stars For Our Troops and suggested that we become active in this mission. We did, and we continue to be.

Currently, we meet at two locations monthly - 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Brunswick Fire House,
Hoosick St, Troy and the 3rd Monday of the month at Gettysburg Flag Works, Rts 9/20 in E. Greenbush.

We also meet at the American Legion, Union St, Niskayuna, but haven't set up a regular schedule. We are also looking for a meeting site in the north area near Clifton Park/Ballston Spa area.

We bring snacks to share and our own drinks. We cut the washed fields of blue, known as the canton, from old flags, then scissor off the embroidered Stars. Into a plastic pouch go one of those Stars with this message:

"I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A.  I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten."

All flags can be donated, the embroidered stars that are used are less than the size of a business card.

The embroidered Star is used so the soldier can feel it when they put their hand in their pocket, and they know someone is thinking about them.

If you have a flag or want to make a donation to help  cover postage and packaging, bring that with you or contact Susan directly.

This is a great project for all ages! Let's support Susan and keep it going!

I left early to go pick up my drugs at Price Chopper but then realized they were at Rite Aid.

Great time and everyone worked so hard and fast - I am amazed what you are able to accomplish in 2 hours. The large bag of envelopes were mailed today, so many more soldiers and veterans will have their Stars in a few days. Thanks for all of you gathering again and making a difference in many people's lives.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
