Volunteer at Food Bank Warehouse-JUNE!

Update...we are now collecting soda can flip tops for Ronald McDonald house, so bring them in with you and they will be collected by Debbie or myself (Sharon) Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, Inc. promotes the health, development and well being of children and their families. They accomplish this through the Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for families of seriously ill children, and by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the lives of children and their families.

We are welcome, reliable and trusted volunteer helpers at the Food Bank and we are on their schedule every month. This month we will be working  the 6:30-8:30 shift as usual. This is a very fun as well as rewarding opportunity. Don't worry if you think you won't be able to keep up...no one will be judging how hard or long you work...breaks are fine.

We normally meet up for coffee or dinner at the Route 7 Diner beforehand...around 5:15-5:30....let me know if you plan on coming there so I can secure a big enough table!

If the list fills up, make sure you get on the waiting list because the list changes a LOT and we want to make sure we have a full group. They really need a solid commitment of numbers.

If you cannot make it, PLEASE make sure you take your name off the RSVP as soon as you can, even if there is not a waiting list. The Food Bank needs to know how many are coming and I would like to assure them that the head count I give them is how many show up.

From this point forward, if you are a no show to two volunteer meetups, you will be removed from the group and will have to rejoin in three months. I am sorry for this new policy but it is the only way to build and maintain a trustworthy and credible group of volunteers.

No flip-flops, slippers or sandals, please.ALSO, leave all purses and backpacks in your vehicle.

The work in the warehouse consists of the sorting and repacking of non food items, as well as some food items like cookies and produce, etc.  Most of the volunteer work takes place in the warehouse, sorting and repacking items for distribution to our member agencies. The work can be dirty at times, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting soiled and dress in layers to stay warm in the warehouse.

Remember, this work can be tortuous...all those desserts to drool over. OK...the steaks too for you meat lovers!

All ages are welcome in the warehouse, however those under 14 or 15 years old must be accompanied by adults.

REMEMBER-Join the waiting lists so we have backup!

About the Food Bank of Northeastern NY.

The Regional Food Bank has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. It is the only organization of its kind in northeastern New York. The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies serving hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties. From Plattsburgh to Newburgh, in urban, rural, and suburban communities, the Food Bank provides over 20 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies.

The mission of the Regional Food Bank is to alleviate hunger and prevent food waste.  We work toward this mission by ensuring that all products available for donation reach the Food Bank and are distributed judiciously to our member agencies; by practicing responsible stewardship; and by actively participating in the community to increase awareness of hunger and poverty.

The Regional Food Bank is a non-profit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

I always love getting together with everyone and working at the Food Bank. I don't eat meat so had a minute or two of wondering if I was going to be able to handle it, but the gloves I was given to use helped a lot. Once I got past that it was as wonderful an experience as always. What a great group of hard workers!

I am unable to attend the Food Bank tonight....so also will not be there for dinner. We never know how many will show for dinner....could be one or 12. When you go in, identify yourself as a volunteer and tell the waitress to direct others to your table....or maybe someone will be there already. There is always lots of room there and you will not be disappointed with their food. Check out their $11 dinner that includes wine, salad, full dinner and dessert!
    See you soon somewhere.
