(There is no deadline to apply for these positions...I put September 14th only because they are very much in need at the moment and would be grateful if people could sign up by would be nice to send them a group of people from our volunteers)

The American Red Cross is looking for people to volunteer as front desk receptionists at their headquarters on Everett Road in Albany.

While they can use all the help they can get, they would like a commitment of once a month for either the 8:30-12:30 or 12:30-4:30.

I have been doing this for about a year now and it's been not only rewarding but has opened my eyes to all the work they do. I am honored to be part of this global "army" of volunteers.

It's easy to get started and once you complete the application, have a background check done and attend a short orientation, you are classified as an official American Red Cross volunteer. This will open up many more opportunities to help from attending local functions to being deployed across the country for's all up to you as to how much you can do.

Three Steps to the Volunteer Application process:

STEP 1: The Volunteer Application
This application will give us information on what areas you are interested in volunteering in and your personal contact information as well as past experience.

STEP 2: Background Check
The American Red Cross requires a background check for all of its volunteers. You will be directed to an outside website to complete your background check and will need to let us know when the check is complete.

STEP 3: Volunteer Orientation

You will need to register for a Volunteer Orientation. There a multiple orientations every month at all of our different locations. Once you have completed steps two and three, you will be given scheduling information to register for this orientation.

STEP 4: Smile from a sense of deep satisfaction
(well okay, that's four steps!)

I am new to the group so I don't really know any of the other members, but the Red Cross associate said this orientation group was much larger than usual; I am assuming this is due to our Meetup's participation.

The orientations are ongoing...if you miss that one, another will be upcoming. I am very happy to see others joining the American Red Cross "army". They have so many jobs to help out with...receptionists are just one. Once you pass your background check, have your application in and attend your short orientation, the doors are open for lots of opportunities. Thank you!

I checked on the website to complete the volunteer app - It looks like the orientation is scheduled from 3 to 4:30 that day unless you made some special arrangements for this group. Could you please verify the time.

Just a note, based on Mary's comment that she can work weekends. The office is only open M-F, however if you're interested in other activities, feel free to call the office to find out about other opportunities.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
