Hike: AT: Trillium Hike / G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area, VA

Long hike: 12 mi., 3000 ft. ascent/descent. Short hike: 6 mi., 1400 ft. ascent/descent.

 

People flock from around the world to this nearby section of the Blue Ridge the first week of May for one reason: to see the extraordinary display of blooming trillium. We’ll make our annual pilgrimage with a new routing starting from the Trillium Parking Area on Rt. 638 atop the ridge. We’ll all join in a southerly loop – covering the best areas for trillium viewing – off the Appalachian Trail incorporating the “Tower,” Verlin Smith and Ted Lake Trails. Long hikers add a harder extension past Thompson Lake. All hikers end back at Trillium Parking.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

 

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

 

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers must be able to keep a 2 mph pace.
