Long hike: 11.7 mi., 3400 ft. ascent, 2950 ft. descent. Medium hike: 8.6 mi., 2050 ft. ascent, 2250 ft. descent. Short hike: 5.4 mi., 1450 ft. ascent, 1400 ft. descent.
No matter which distance option you choose on this Appalachian Trail jaunt, you’re bound to get superb views. Rescheduled from March, our hike begins at Elkwallow Wayside along the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah’s North District and follows the AT southbound. Short hikers go as far as Beahms Gap Overlook and medium hikers to Panorama/Thornton Gap. Long hikers continue with a climb to Marys Rock – the best viewpoint of all – before descending back on the Meadow Spring Trail.

Virginia Bus: Bus leaves from 16th and I Streets, NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP (VERY limited parking). Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure time.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.
Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.
Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers must be able to keep a 2 mph pace.
