  • July 6, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

VA Bus / $25 (nonmembers $28).

Long hike: 10.0 mi., 3900 ft. ascent, 3750 ft. descent. Short hike: 6.0 mi., 2700 ft. ascent, 2550 ft. descent.

A bewildering number of trails lace the north end of the Massanuttens, and we’ll cover many today. From Rt. 613, we’ll all take the Sherman Gap Trail up, over & down East Massanutten Mtn. Ridge to lovely, mountain-ringed Elizabeth Furnace, finishing on the Botts Trail. From the Furnace, long hikers add a circuit on Tuscarora, Sidewinder, and Mudhole Gap Trails, the last stretch on Sherman Gap Trail.

Leaders:  Pat (patholobaugh<at>gmail.com) or 301/908--2637 and Ann (annmgordon<at>gmail.com) or 703/941--2508

In addition to RSVP'ing here, contact hike leaders directly to reserve a spot on the bus for this hike.

Please do not send text messages, as this may delay confirming your seat on the bus. And remember, if you are confirmed for a seat on the bus, please cancel your reservation with the hike leader if your plans change or you are unable to attend so that someone else can make a reservation in your place.

For additional details, see www.capitalhikingclub.org

Virginia Bus: Bus leaves from 16th and I Streets, NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP (VERY limited parking). Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure time.

Additional pick-up points are as follows: Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop Vienna Metro – North Lot, Fair Lakes Bus Shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66) Centreville Commuter Lot (by reservation only)

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

For more information, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org.

Liability Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers must be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

Hello! This is my first time hiking with your group, and also making my way to 16th and I Streets. Is there a number I can call in case I reach the area but happen to get lost? Or I cannot find the bus? Thank you!

There are still several RSVP's on this site who have not contacted me directly to confirm your reservation. If you have not contacted me (and I will reply to confirm when you do!), you do not have a reservation on the bus. ALSO--another reminder about water---BRING LOTS because it's going to be hot! This co-leader Pat. This hike has lots of rocky sections so it is important to have proper footwear. Also, there are stream crossings that are not a problem most of the time, but with all this rain lately you should be prepared. Nothing huge, just wet....if you have hiking poles you might want to bring them. If you have any questions please email me directly. BRING LOTS OF WATER and your lunch. See you on Saturday
