Hike: Dark Hollow / Rose River / Swimming Hole, Shenandoah Nat’l Park, VA

  • Jul 20, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

$25 (nonmembers $28). Long hike: 11.4 mi., 4200 ft. ascent, 2400 ft. descent. Short hike: 8.2 mi., 3200 ft. ascent, 1700 ft. descent

For a reprieve from Washington’s oppressive July sizzle, don’t miss our outing in Shenandoah’s Central District–typically 10 degrees cooler than in D.C.  From Rt. 648, we’ll take a variety of trails--Upper Dark Hollow Trail,Rapidan Fire Rd, Stony Mtn Trail, Rose River Fire Rd and Rose River Trail--to the swimming hole at the base of Rose River Falls, one of the park’s best. After a cooling swim, we continue on the Rose River Trail to Fishers Gap on the Skyline Drive, where the short hike ends. Long hikers then embark upon a northbound stretch of the AT to Hawksbill

Leaders:  Mark Tune 703/401--2719 & Al Havinga 703/683--1958

You must RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  Only call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

What time can I expect to be back in DC/at the metro after the short hike?

Hi Holli, The club makes a strong effort to (and usually does) keep on schedule with leaving DC promptly at 8am, and return time by about 6pm. However, with 40+ people, some times things can happen to delay the return. We generally recommend, that if you have tickets to a show or other non-flexible schedule for Saturday evening, that you come with us on a week when the possibility of returning a little later won't be a significant issue. On the short -vs- the long hike, the club has one bus, so we all go out and come back together. The short hikers generally have a different pickup point from the long (faster) everyone should finish around the same time. Then we have a little time to share a cool drink and some snacks, and we get back on the bus for the trip back towards DC. Hope this helps, and look forward to seeing you on a hike soon.

Based on our scouting trip, I've corrected the mileage for the hikes. In particular, please note that the short hike is over 8 miles. If it is very hot (as forecast), this could be a tough hike for some people. At a minimum, you need to be able to do the short hike distance. There is the possibility of a bail-out for anyone in distress which would reduce the short hike by about 1 mile and about 400 feet of ascent/descent.

So excited! My birthday weekend plans changed and camping didn't work out. Well not so excited about that, but thrilled to now make this! If I get motivated enough I'll bring some treats! See you Saturday!

Scouting Report: A spectacular loop around Rose River falls. Due to rain on Thursday and Friday there was water coming from all directions. The river was high and a lot of water was going over the falls and occassionally the trails. Trails though were very passable but slippery going downhill. Most trails are wide and very passable. About a 1 mile stretch (downhill) of the Stoneyman Mtn trail was overgrown and a bit muddy. The uphills were steadily up but not particularly steep or strenuous. The ride to the beginning of the hike brings us to the back country of the Shenandoahs. Very beautiful with great views of valleys and mountains in the distance. Suggestions: Hydrate on Friday before the hike and bring plenty of water. 2-3 2-3+ quarts of water if it is a hot day.

Good footwear is a must. It was also a bit muddy and there were quite a few water crossing. I suspect many of these will dry up by the time of the hike on Saturday.

Hello! I would like to RSVP for this hike, but I do not have a Paypal account to pay the hiking fee online. Is it possible for me to give the money to you in person?

    • Archana

Just FYI - My first attempt at paying got an error claiming "Invalid Credit Card". However attempt to submit a second time with zero corrections seemed to succeed.

Hi Archana, Thanks for letting us know. We'll keep an eye out to see if other people have the issue.

Mark and I are looking forward to leading this hike. The CHC is piloting using Meetup for signups for this hike. You must use Meetup and pay in advance to attend. We are scouting on July 14 and will post additional notes about the hike after we scout. Bring plenty of water!
