Hike: AT / South River Falls, Shenandoah Nat’l Park, VA PATC Map 10 / VA Bus

  • Jul 27, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

$25 (nonmembers $28) plus park pass or possible fee. Long hike: 12 1/2 mi., 2400 ft. ascent, 2900 ft. descent. Short hike: 9 1/2 mi., 1800 ft. ascent, 2300 ft. descent.

Shenandoah’s summertime splendor will be on full display on this excursion to the southern end of the park’s Central District.  The highlight: spectacular South River Falls, which we’ll reach via a southbound stint on the Appalachian Trail from Lewis Mtn. Campground and the South River Fire Rd. After a possible swim at the base of the falls, we’ll take the South River Falls Trail to the South River Picnic Area, the end of the short hike. Long hikers log more mileage with a loop on the Saddleback Mtn. Trail and the AT.

Leaders:  Brian O’Konski 202/362--2982 and Mitch Baer

In addition to RSVP'ing here, call hike leader directly to reserve a spot on the bus for this hike.

Please do not send text messages, as this may delay confirming your seat on the bus. And remember, if you are confirmed for a seat on the bus, please cancel your reservation with the hike leader if your plans change or you are unable to attend so that someone else can make a reservation in your place.

For additional details, see www.capitalhikingclub.org

Virginia Bus: Bus leaves from 16th and I Streets, NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP (VERY limited parking). Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure time.

Additional pick-up points are as follows:

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop;

Vienna Metro – North Lot, Fair Lakes Bus Shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66);

Centreville Commuter Lot (by reservation only)

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

For more information, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org.

Liability Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Usually we return around 6:30 pm. However, sometimes it is later, and hikers generally do not schedule a concert or other event that evening.

    The hike has been scouted. How the Falls will appear will depend on the amount of rain preceding the hike. If you want a swimming hole look at the August 10th hike. There are multiple hike options between 6 and 12 1/2 miles, and the distances for two options are corrected above. To sign up for the hike please leave me a phone message.
