Hike: Cedar Run / White Oak Canyon / Swimming Hole, Shenandoah Nat’l Park

  • August 10, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

$25 (nonmembers $28) plus park pass or possible fee.

Long hike: 10.0 mi., 3100 ft. ascent/descent. Short hike: 7.2 mi., 2450 ft. ascent/descent.

NOTICE - Hike Change - Please Read

Due to continuing congestion in the Lower White Oak Canyon parking area, the start/stop point for the hike has been changed since bus parking at White Oak is not possible.  The route, however, is the same. The hike will begin on Skyline Drive with both long and short hikers descending the White Oak Canyon and ascending the Cedar Run Canyon together, then long hikers continue on the AT. Although we will pass all the potential swimming holes, none are conveniently located relative to the trail end.  Therefore a group swim won't be possible, but everyone is welcome to their own dip, splash or restful moment at any of the water pools along the way.  Rick W.

To see waterfalls, there’s no better hike than this! We’ll pass seven of them in a dazzling circuit from Rt. 600 at the base of the Blue Ridge – one on our ascent of the Cedar Run Trail, then six more on our descent of the White Oak Canyon Trail. We’ll make the climb together, but split into separate groups for much of the descent – long hikers reaching the canyon from the top of the Cedar Run Trail via the Appalachian Trail, short hikers on the more direct Skyland-Big Meadows Horse Trail. At the base of one of the falls (it plunges 60 ft.), we’ll re-unite for a swim before continuing together back to Rt. 600.

Leaders:  Anne Taylor & Rick 240/687--0884

You must RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  Only call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

Virginia Bus Routing: Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure time listed below. All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.

Vienna Metro – North Lot, Last Bus Shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.

If you are a first time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can insure that you know where to meet the bus.  If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

There were 46 hikers on the bus, 4 official car-poolers and 3 unofficial car-poolers. The hike started out in a heavy rain and fog that wasn't forecasted, but it ended in about 20 minutes of hiking, then we had partly cloudy weather the rest of the day. Waterfalls were excellent for the time of year. Many people took advantage and swam, dipped, dunked, etc. in the various pools. The short hike climb up Cedar Run proved to be quite a challenge for the short hikers. Only 12 people did the long hike. Slippery rocks on the Whiteoak Canyon descent also caused issues and time delays. The hike was over-time by almost two hours.

Mike - Thanks also. It's always nice having other experienced club members along on a hike. I'm glad we did not have to take you up on the offer to go back down Cedar Run to find the wayward hikers.

I am planning on going on the hike this weekend. Can anyone tell me what the parking is like at the Roslyn bus stop? Thanks. Andre

    August 6, 2013

    • Michael M.

Andre ... As a fellow car-owner who used to try to use the Rosslyn stop, I would say that I am much happier driving to Vienna to meet the bus. The parking is free and very easy there.

Thank you for the information Andy, Anne, and Michael! I will plan on catching the bus in Vienna. Thanks again.

If I come to the stop at 16th & I street, will I see a van or bus over there? When will we come back on Saturday? Are we going to swim there? I am quite new to the group so I appreciate that any awesome members could answer my questions :D

    • Anne T.

Sorry about that Eva. The bus has been filling up very early these days. I see you are on the waitlist so maybe a spot will open up - if not, please try another hike.

      August 7, 2013

    • Michael M.

Eva, it is very common that spots open up Friday evening, so keep your eye on it. It's hard to say what will happen with the new reservation system, however.

Based on responses thus far, it is likely we will have to collect the park fee for this hike. It is $8 so please be sure to bring along extra cash if you do not have a pass.

    August 6, 2013

    • Rick W.

David, yes you can buy a pass when we enter the park.

      August 7, 2013

    • Michael M.

I need to buy a new one myself, I believe.

Hello! This will be my first CHC hike. I'll be at the stop at 16th and I street. Looking forward to it!

    August 6, 2013

    • Michael M.

Excellent, Tania! We look forward to meeting you!

      August 7, 2013

  • Adrienne D.

Sounds like a great hike. I will be catching the bus at Vienna Metro for the first time. Is there truly swimming at the end of the hike?

    August 4, 2013

    • Michael M.

      Well said, David!

      August 6, 2013

    • Anne T.

Adrienne - please see Rick's comment above. We will not be having an organized swim given the necessary re-routing.

      August 6, 2013

  • Rick W.

Please see the hike change notice above. No route change, but any swimming will have to be done during the hike.

  • Devashree

Can I let you know closer to the date where I would be getting on the bus? It will be either Vienna metro stop or DC. Not sure yet.

    July 29, 2013

    • Rick W.

Devashree, We don't need to know your bus stop just yet, but you should commit to one about three days before the hike. It helps the hike leaders to know if everybody that signed up is on the bus and whether or not walk-ons would be allowed.

      July 30, 2013

    • Devashree

Hi Rick, I'll meet everyone at the DC stop on Sat morning. Looking forward to the hike.
