Hike: Sky Meadows Park, VA

  • October 12, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

$25 (non-members $28) + park fee/pass.  Long hike: about 9 miles, some ascent, some descent.  Short hike: about 5 miles, some ascent, some descent.  (Exact miles TBA--but there will be options to suit hikers of all levels)

Due to the government shutdown, the originally scheduled hike in Shenandoah National Park has been moved to Sky Meadows State Park. Sky Meadows is also in Virginia, about an hour's drive from the Vienna metro stop.

Leaders:  Les Bissell 571/[masked] and Sonja G (sonja.g<@>gmail.com)

You must RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  Only call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

However, if you are a first-time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can ensure that you know where to meet the bus.  If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.

If after you make this reservation, you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 8am, the day before hike, BOTH: 1.) Change RSVP to "No" --AND-- 2.) Press "Request Refund" link, and include your FULL NAME, and DATE YOU PAID.

For additional details, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org

Virginia Bus Routing:  Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below.  All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.

Vienna Metro – North Lot, Last Bus Shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers must be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership $12.00 per year. Mail a check to our Membership Director to receive a quarterly hike schedule and reduced rates.  More info at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/Membership.cmpx

I know I won't get a refund, but I've spent a wet, uncomfortable night in DC. I'm cancelling. If anyone can get on the bus in my place, that's great. Been to the place before, it's beautiful. Sorry for the late notice.

It seems like there is a flood watch for the area of the hike and that it will be raining more than planned. I am going to cancel and understand if I cannot get the refund due to the timing. Thanks!

I received a question regarding the need to bring a National Park Pass: You can leave those at home--Sky Meadows is a State Park that charges only a nominal fee per bus (which will be covered by the Club.) Also, you may have noticed it's been raining A LOT lately, so be prepared for some mud on the trails, and bring rain gear--there could still be some showers coming down tomorrow...Les and I are looking forward to a great day with all of you hardy hikers tomorrow!

Is this terrain mostly rolling meadows?

    October 10, 2013

    • Jim

There is a section that is meadows but a fair amount of it is wooded. There is a challenging section to the hike but I led this hike a few weeks ago and, while a couple of people were a little pushed by the tougher parts, everyone made the entire hike and enjoyed it.

Thanks, guys! I was happy to find the decent elevation changes listed on the past winter's schedule for this hike. That said, I just canceled due to the weather forecast and additional conflicts that just popped up. Hopefully, somebody from the wait list should be able to pick up my spot in time.

When are we likely to get back from the trip?

    October 10, 2013

    • Sonja

Hi Bridget. We will make every effort possible to return to 16th and I St. N.W. no later than 6:30 p.m., with corresponding earlier stops at the other bus departure points. However, there is no way to guarantee that a problem might not cause the return to DC to be later than 6:30 p.m.

How to get in to the waiting list?

    October 10, 2013

  • Dave

Is anyone planning on carpooling from DC for this hike? I can rent a car, but it would be easier to chip in for gas money.

    October 8, 2013

    • Sonja

Hi Dave, you don't need to worry about carpools for CHC's Saturday hikes. We have a bus to take us to the hike site. The bus leaves from 16th & I --easily accessible with the red, orange, or blue metro lines. There are also additional bus stops in VA. Please see the description above for details.

HIKE CHANGE HIKE CHANGE HIKE CHANGE
Hello Oct 12 CHC Hikers. Well, since the USA doesn't have a fully functioning federal government these days, we are changing our hiking plans from the closed Shenandoah National Park to Virginia's lovely open Sky Meadows State Park. The park has more than 17 miles of hiking trails and horse trails ranging from easy to difficult (also FYI the park offers access to the Appalachian Trail). We will be covering roughly half that many miles of hiking, with shorter hikes available. The park has scenic views, rolling pastures and woodlands and provides a range of hiking trails to suit everyone. As with the hike it is replacing, it will be the Virginia bus pick-ups for this hike. It should be pretty much "peak" leaf season around here so bring your lunches, cameras and prepare to do some "leaf peeping" on these scenic and historic trails.

    Happy trails,
    Les

POSSIBLE HIKE CHANGE Hello and Attention Corbin Mountain Oct 12 Hikers!! ..In case you weren't aware, our federal government is having "issues" and as a result this hike into a National Park has been (will be?) affected. Being fearless leaders, Sonja and I have been working diligently on getting a replacement hike in order, if need be. (with the help from Mark and Andy) So, our Plan is to see how things look on Tuesday (the 8th) evening. If the government is still closed then, I'll post info here (and I will email you) about the replacement hike and we will do that new hike instead (even if government opens on Wednesday or later in the week). That will give those who have already signed up for the original hike plenty of time to get a refund if they don't like the sound of the new hike. We will go someplace fun and scenic, I assure you. We wont let the government shutdown spoil our good time! feel free to ask any questions. Les

      Hi Channing and Akuba,

      October 6, 2013

    • Andy B

If you have reserved a seat but are not able to attend, as long as you follow the posted refund policy, we are happy to offer you a refund. This policy is posted on the hike page and you were also told this policy when you paid for the hike. Did you request the refund according the listed steps? If you did, please let us know the details of when you made the refund request and which hike(s) it was for...we will get you the refund. If you didn't show up for the hike (without cancelling) or cancelled after the refund time, the club has paid the bus company for your seat and we have probably turned away other people who would have liked to come, so we will not be able a refund for either of those cases.

  • Martha

Hello! I have a VERY well behaved pup that I would love to bring on this hike. Is this a dog friendly event?

    October 1, 2013

    • Les B.

Hi Martha, sorry but dogs aren't allowed on the bus.

      October 1, 2013

    • Andy B

Hi Martha, The club has a bus that carries everyone to/from the hike, and unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on the bus. The club does have Moonlight hikes and (around the holidays) carpool hikes that are usually dog friendly.

Maybe a stupid question, but should we be concerned that the park will be closed?

Oops sorry! Meant to post this in an Oct. 5 hike..

      October 1, 2013

    • Andy B

The October 5th hike is not in a National Park, so is not an issue with the shutdown. For this hike, the hike leaders will review the situation when the date gets a little closer.

      October 1, 2013

  • Sonja

The hike starts out in fairly flat terrain, but after a 30 minute warm up or so it begins a long and steady ascent towards the highest point on Skyline Drive. The sheer length of the ascent (approx 3800 feet) may present a challenge for novice or casual hikers. There are no bail-out points along the way, so all hikers have to be able to complete the short hike. The short hike will end in the parking lot of Skyland Resort, while the long hikers can add on a scenic out-and-back from Skyland Resort to Miller's Head. Let us know if you have any questions.

    September 26, 2013

  • Sonja

Sign up for this hike will open at 8am on September 28. Please bring your National Park Pass if you have one. The hikers leaders scouted this hike on September 21--in pouring rain we might add, so it can only get better! Starting in Nethers, it is a beautiful hike along little used trails --we did not encounter any other hikers all day (then again, it was raining), only deer. We will hike in the forest the entire time--but there may be some good views; it was impossible to tell due to thick fog we encountered. There is a bit of underbrush, but the trail is still shorts friendly. You definitely want to wear sturdy shoes or boots and maybe even bring hiking poles, as there are several stream crossings with very slippery stones.
