Hike: Big Schloss/Mill Mountain/Little Stony Creek, VA/WV PATC Map F/ VA Bus

  • October 19, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

$25 (non-members $28).

NOTE: HIKE DESCRIPTION BELOW HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION AND THERE WILL BE A LATE RETURN TO WASHINGTON DC:

Long hike: 12 1/2 mi., 2300 ft. ascent/descent. Short hike: 6 1/2 mi., 1600 ft. ascent/descent.

Assuming the federal government shutdown continues, the hike on October 19th will change and follow a different route to the Big Schloss rocks with two alternatives.  An out and back hike of 6 ½ miles with 1,600 feet of ascent/descent, and a circuit hike of 12 ½ miles with 2,300 feet of ascent/descent.

All hikers will ascend the Big Schloss cutoff trail, and take the Mill Mountain trail to Big Schloss then retrace their steps to the junction with the cutoff trail. Short hikers will descend on the cutoff trail, and long hikers will continue on the Mill Mountain trail for a circuit with the Tuscarora and Little Stony Creek trails.

LATE RETURN:

With this change the group will return later than usual to the Washington DC area, estimated to be about 6:30 pm to Vienna. One can cancel a reservation before 8 am on Friday and request a refund.

We just scouted this hike today and beautiful colors are popping out!  There is quite a long ascent and descent so please wear boots with good soles and bring poles if you have them.  The falling leaves on the rocks also make the trail slippery in places.

Leaders:  Brian O’Konski 202/362--2982 and Chris Powell (bernchrisp<@>aol.com) or 650/346--7331

You must RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  Only call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

However, if you are a first time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can ensure that you know where to meet the bus.  If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.

If after you make this reservation, you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 8am, the day before hike, BOTH: 1.) Change RSVP to "No" --AND-- 2.) Press "Request Refund" link, and include your FULL NAME, and DATE YOU PAID.

For more information, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org.

Virginia Bus Routing:  Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below.  All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.

Vienna Metro – North Lot, Last Bus Shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers must be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership $12.00 per year. Mail a check to our Membership Director to receive a quarterly hike schedule and reduced rates.  More info at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/Membership.cmpx

Beautiful Fall day and a wonderful hike

It's in the low 40s right now at the hike area. If you get cold, you may want to bring a jacket and thin gloves/hat.

With the federal government reopening, the Big Schloss hike will follow the original route in the printed schedule. This is a little less strenuous than the revised route. The bus will drop off and pick up hikers at different points, aka a linear or line hike. The expected return time to Vienna is 6 pm, with later times for the subsequent stops. It looks like we will have cool weather on Saturday with a chance of afternoon showers.

With the shutdown ended is the original hike back on?

      October 17, 2013

  • AmyK

hey, but it looks like the shutdown will be over soon...does that mean we do our original route? and if we do the original one, any idea what time we will be back in DC? Just trying to make dinner plans with friends so no biggie if you don't know. Just thought I would ask.

    Thanks!

As the bus can return later than expected, if you have an important event planned for Saturday evening we do not suggest going on a hike that day.

is there still any way to get on the waitlist?

I went out hiking today nearby Big Schloss and it was beautiful with the fall colors. But the leaves are slippery on the rocks and I fell today after slipping on a rock covered with leaves, so I wanted to remind everyone to wear sturdy hiking boots with good soles (for your own safety). Also, it was a bit cooler up at elevation, so dress in layers. We are supposed to have a front come through and clear away the clouds for Saturday but also lower the temperatures. It should be perfect hiking weather.

Looking forward to this hike, either way.

That 12 1/2 mile circuit route is my favorite way to hike Big Schloss! :-)

Chris and I have scouted the hike. The leaves have started to change color and fall, and more will be on the ground by the day of the hike. So we will be walking on leaves and hiking poles are recommended to provide additional points of support. If the federal government shutdown continues then the hiking route to the Big Schloss rocks will be changed. Watch for a possible message posting here on Wednesday October 16. If the possible change makes you alter your plans you can cancel more than 24 hours in advance and request a refund.
