Hike: Appalachian Trail "Roller Coaster": Rt. 50 to Rt. 7, VA

  • October 26, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • -

$25 (non-members $28) + park fee/pass.

Long hike: 14.0 miles, 4250 ft. ascent, 4200 ft. descent.  Moderate hike: 7.5 miles, 2200 ft. ascent, 2150 ft descent.

Like long-distance hiking? Today’s long hike, a 14-mile ramble on the Appalachian Trail, is our longest of the quarter.  It heads north along the Blue Ridge crest from Ashby Gap (Rts. 50/17) to Snickers Gap (Rt. 7).  For a shorter option, follow the long-hike route as far as Rt. 605 near Mt. Weather, ride the bus to Snickers Gap, then hike back 0.5 miles to Bears Den Rocks and await the long hikers.

Leaders: Vera  (vera_holovchenko<@>yahoo.com) or 214/289--9993 and Andy Bily 703/836--0065

You must RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  Only call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

If after you make this reservation, you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 8am, the day before hike, BOTH: 1.) Change RSVP to "No" --AND-- 2.) Press "Request Refund" link, and include your FULL NAME, and DATE YOU PAID.

However, if you are a first time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can ensure that you know where to meet the bus.  If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.

For more information, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org.

Virginia Bus Routing:  Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below.  All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.

Vienna Metro – North Lot, Last Bus Shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers must be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership $12.00 per year. Mail a check to our Membership Director to receive a quarterly hike schedule and reduced rates.  More info at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/Membership.cmpx

Its at my pace, sorry. I can also generate kml or kmz files - let me know if you want one.

Given the terrain, I think your pace is good. Other sources show about 4200 feet of elevation gain.

Thanks go out to Andy and Vera for a great hike

Vera, Stan, Andy and Brian - Thank you for organizing the Roller Coaster. I enjoyed the challenge, though it may not have seemed so at times, while intaking the beauty of the Appalachian. I am thrilled to be a part of this club and am looking forward to future fun events with you all.

Vera, you are a real trooper! A special thank you to you. I am amazed by your cheerful energy in caring for the rest of us all throughout the day.

It was great meeting all of you!

P.S. Though last night I did go salsa and had somewhat tamer than usual dancing experience, today, I am paying the price for my frivolousness ;))

    October 27, 2013

    • D

I second that sentiment- Vera, Andy & co. did a wonderful job organizing the event! And thanks to everyone for being so friendly and making that a success! I confess that I had only enough energy to shower and do laundry... and that's about it! Congrats on going out afterwards! Instead, I'm doing the walking ghost tour of Georgetown tonight... should be a piece of cake after that hike! :)

This was truly a roller coaster. The trek was treacherous and grueling because of the many rocks coupled with the long descents. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the 14 miles.!!! Much thanks to Vera who was so thoughtful, kind, and encouraging, kudos!!!

Thank you, Akuba, for your nice words. You did an incredible job considering it is your first long hike!

    • Akuba M.

I'm going to stick to the 10 mile hikes for a while. This long hike was taxing on my hips, calves, and swollen knee. However, I should be ready in two weeks for the next hike. Thanks again!

Dear Andy and Vera, i am sad to cancel but a last minute family matter won't allow me to go. Have fun. I hope am not late for getting a refund. Best JL

No problem. There are plenty of other people would love to take your spot. We hope to see you on a hike soon!

Metro is reporting only one delay tomorrow: Orange line people coming through Landover/New Carlton. If you're coming through there, please give yourself more time. All other lines report no scheduled delays: http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/metro_service_status/advisories.cfm?AID=2291

Seems like quite a waiting list. I've only done 1 or maybe 2 hikes since we went all meetup. Any thoughts on people showing up the day of? In hopes of catching a spot last minute? I'm in but advocating for a wait lister!! And maybe this will be helpful info for others on the wait list.

any room left for this hike?

    October 24, 2013

    • Andy B

The hike is filled, but there is a wait list in case of cancellations. All people on the wait list will receive an email if a slot opens up, and the first to RSVP "yes" gets the seat on the bus.

      October 24, 2013

  • Krassi

The second I received email about an open spot for this hike I click RSVP but opened with an apologetic message that the hike is already full. Bummer!

    October 24, 2013

    • Sanjeev

I think you have to jump to it very quickly. Everybody on the wait list gets the mail, but only one person gets to rsvp .

      October 24, 2013

  • Paola

    Hello Andy!
Could I be added to the waiting list? Or I will be just geting alerts if a spot comes up?
    Thanks!!!

    October 22, 2013

    • Alberto

That's true. I cannot add me to the waiting list also...

      October 23, 2013

    • Vera G.

Have you figured out how to get on a waiting list? Everybody on the waiting list at the same time would be alerted if a seat becomes avaialble.

      October 23, 2013

  • D

Hi, Andy! Quick question... do you know approximately what time we should expect to be back? Just trying to coordinate transportation. Thanks! :)

    October 21, 2013

    • CHC O.

Hi D, We should be back between 6 and 6:30. However, on occasion, an issue might arise to cause us to be a little late. We generally recommend people not have fixed "show at the kennedy center starts at 7:30" type plans for the evening, in case something happens.

      October 21, 2013

    • D

      Good to know- thanks!

      October 23, 2013

  • Valmy

Hi Andy , could be added to the waiting list. Thks

    October 22, 2013

    • Andy B

Hi Valmy, Sure... We've had a couple people ask this, so I wonder if there's an issue with meetup. At the top of the list of people coming, is there a button that says like "inform me of an opening"?

      October 22, 2013

    • andy b.

I believe it would say "Notify Me".

    Andy-

I just joined the group and added myself to the waiting list for the Roller Coaster hike- it sounds like a blast and at a great time of year. Can you let me know how many folks are on the waiting list (i.e., and what is the likelihood that a spot will open up?) I'm looking forward to exploring the area with the group, if not on this trip, then another one soon!

    Thanks,

    Mindy

    October 21, 2013

    • Andy B

Hi Mindy, There look to be about 20 people on the wait list, but there is no priority order: Everyone on the wait list will get an email when a spot opens up, and the first one to RSVP "yes" to it will get the spot. We almost always have cancellations during the week, so there will almost certainly be spots opening up.

      October 21, 2013

    • Mindy S.

Great- thanks! Looks like I just missed the first open spot. I'll keep my eyes peeled!

  • Sanjeev

    Andy, or Vera,
I got a spot on this hike. However, the site only asked me to pay $25, and I am not a member. How do I pay the difference?
Also, not sure if the payment went through - any way to conform this?
    thanks

How can I get on the wait list?

    October 21, 2013

    • CHC O.

Create a meetup account, and join the CHC meetup. Then there should be a button at the top right of the page that says "Notify Me" -- this will get you on the "waiting list" and will send you an email if a spot opens up.

    October 21, 2013

You need to join up to the club by creating an account in meetup.. Once you do that, then you should see on this page top right, a choice to sign up for notification when a spot opens up.

    Hello Andy,
I just joined up, and am interested in the Roller coaster hike.
Are there any spots left on this trip?
How strict is the 2 mph pace requirement ? and does it include lunch break? I am not very sure about my pace - I think I can do close to that pace, but my longest hike has been only the Catlett Mountain hike of 11 miles, which I did in less than 5 1/2 hours.
Reason I am asking is I dont want to be a drag on the whole group.

    October 20, 2013

    • Andy B

Hi Sanjeev, All the spots are taken for the hike, but you can get on the wait list. The 2mph rate means you can cover 2 miles in an hour of walking. When figuring if you can do this rate, you can leave out how much time you stopped for lunch. This is a challenging hike, so if you're unsure, you might want to consider one of the subsequent hikes. Hope this helps! --Andy

I just did the "Roller Coaster" section two weekends ago and it had soo many rocks on the trail! When you get to the footbridge, that was where we camped, nice stream there. Enjoy!

I have been on one hike. to the massanuttens. that was a long long bus ride. how far is this bus ride? I think it would be helpful if that info was given on every hike. I remember passing shenadoah park and thinking that would have been nice.

    October 19, 2013

The bus ride is around hour and quarter from Vienna.

Vera and I did the scout hike today and it should be a fun hike. The hike is all on the Appalachian trail (except for the final jaunts to the bus). All hikers will start together, then you'll get the option to stop either at the end of the "moderate" hike (where the bus will be waiting for "moderate" hikers), or continue on the AT for the long hike (where the bus will pick up the long hikers).

    1 · October 12, 2013

  • Andy B

This stretch of the Appalachian trail is known as the "roller coaster", as it has repeated stretches of up and down. The "moderate" (formerly known as "short") and the long hike should be considered strenuous. The long hike, at 14 miles, is the longest hike of the season for the club.

There are a couple of overlooks on the route: One each not too far from the end of the moderate and long hikes. Leaves were giving signs of starting to change today, so hopefully will be in full colors during the hike.

The hike is not in a National Park, so will not be affected by the government shutdown.

We look forward to seeing you with us!
