Hike: Riverbend Park / Great Falls National Park, VA (PATC Map D / No Bus)

$5. Long hike: up to 8½ mi., 850 ft. ascent/descent. Short hike: various options.

Meet at Riverbend Park Visitor Center at 9:00 a.m.

For a few precious outdoor hours away from your holiday bustle, don’t miss this outing along the most dramatic stretch of the Potomac River only a short drive from D.C.  From Riverbend Park (part of Fairfax County’s park system), we’ll follow the river trail eastbound to Great Falls. There a choice of loops will take us along the rim of spectacular Mather Gorge past ruins of Matildaville and George Washington’s Powtomack Canal before returning to Riverbend, with enough time remaining in the day to finish holiday errands and prepare for evening festivities.

Hi everyone - looking forward to Saturday. For those who haven't been to Riverbend Park before, take the 1st entrance off Jeffry Rd, NOT the one to the Nature Center. We will meet in the 'upper' parking lot on the left. At a somewhat leisurely pace, the long hike should end 12:30-ish. There are options to shorten or lengthen your hike, if you like.

I will be driving from Pentagon City in Arlington and could pick up 3 people from Pentagon City Metro (or might be able to pick you up if you live nearby). Send me a text if interested. [masked]

Hi Susan & Ingrid, I signed up for myself +2. I am not able to add any more via the RSVP function but I would like to bring one additional person (my husband!)so that would be me +3. Would that be OK?

I'm interested in going but I don't have a car. Would anyone be willing to carpool from Arlington (along orange line)? I can chip in for gas!

  • Ingrid

The parks allow it so no problem as long as the dog is well behaved and on a leash.

Can we take dogs? Leased of course!
