Naomi -- estimating a time is difficult. It takes approximately 1/2 hour to go from Vienna Metro to Prince Williams Forest Park. I'm not sure how long it will take for everyone to get assembled and for administrative matters (logging names, distributing maps, etc.). We certainly won't start before 9:30; probably 9:45 is a safe estimate.

I'll be departing Hunting Point (near Old Town Alexandria) with space for three passengers in a Corolla, for the shorter hike; can pick up on the way to the Vienna Metro Station if I'm given address information before 7 a.m. on Saturday. Text at[masked]

Tricia, I haven't seen how the Club handles carpooling. If Elizabeth and Catie elect to catch a ride with me in Alexandria, you'd be the third of three passengers, so it'll work. We'll find out once we get to Vienna.

Hi Chris - I will meet you at Vienna metro. I misunderstood - thought you were not swinging by Vienna metro. See you there! and thanks again for the ride.

Hi all, I have recently moved to DC, and want to join you all tomorrow. However, just wondering what kind of shoes are required for this hike? Any special hiking shoes or would normal sneakers do?
    Thanks, appreciate your response!

Chris, I'll be at Vienna metro at 9am. How long is this hike going to be?? I'm meeting my daughter from California back in D.C. after hike. Didn't know if a dinner was planned after hike. I'm planning on the short hike. Chris, can you include your cell phone if your comfortable doing that??

    December 27, 2013

  • Lisa/vetchick

So glad you guys are doing this!! I can definitely fit some folks in my car heading down from Vienna. May elect the shorter hike depending on time and pace, as will need to be back to Vienna by 4-4:30.

I am planning to do the 7.5 mile loop - anyone else?

I'm new in this town and meet up. so , I need ride also.
Do I have to contact leaders?

    December 26, 2013

  • Josh S.

    I've updated the address.
Here's more details on the two routes --
Moderate: Laurel Loop Trail down to South Valley, then take Pyrite Mine Road to the North Valley Trail up to Lake One Road, take a series of turns to the South Valley Trail, return via South Valley to Laurel Loop and up to the Visitor Center. 7 1/2 miles, about 600 ft. elevation gain.
Long: Laurel Loop Trail down to South Valley, go to North Valley Trail via Cabin Branch Trail, continue up to Burma Road, go along the road (which eventually becomes a trail) to the South Valley Trail, then go along the South Valley Trail back to Laurel Loop and up to the Visitor Center. 9 1/2 miles, about 800 ft. elevation gain.
Essentially the two trails do similar loops, with the radius of the long hike being a bit more. Both hikes include a stretch along South Quantico Creek, which is probably the most scenic part of the park.
Naturally, detailed maps of the routes will be provided to everyone before we start hiking!

In answer to the questions to date:
    1. We will be starting the hike from the North parking lot at Vienna Metro.
    2. For those meeting at the trailhead, we will be assembling at the parking lot for the Visitor Center. It is on the Park Entrance Road, about 1/2 mile past the entrance booth. It is just beyond the turnoff to the Scenic Drive. If you have questions, call some time this week; I will be in most evenings and I will return any messages left on voicemail.

Will you pls fix the address from meet-up? I use meet-up app and click the address to my gps app. The current address is TREC, which is ~3mils away from VC.

Will you also let me know what time you are starting from VC? I'll come straight to the park. That would be great if you add more details to the 10mil vs 7mil routes...I hiked there on BlackFri and prefer different route this time :)

  • Rachel

I hope there are enough drivers because I'll need a ride too =). See you Saturday.

    December 23, 2013

  • Marcy

Hi, I will meet at the Vienna metro. I also need a ride. Thanks

    December 23, 2013

  • Jasmine

CHC: We gonna met at the north parking lot, right? I will call either two leaders when I am there. :)

    December 20, 2013

  • Stephanie

    Naomi,

It is probably best to contact one of the hike leaders by phone, as it is not always possible to post the *exact* location of the visitors center (or starting point/trail head) on Meetup. Since most will be carpooling, I'd recommend getting the location and approx. time directly from the hike leaders.
