Hike: White Oak Falls / Hawksbill / Skyland, Shenandoah National Park

VA PATC Map 10 / VA Bus

$25 (non-members $28) + park fee/pass.

Long hike: 10 mi., 2700 ft. ascent/descent. Medium hike: 7 mi., 1800 ft. ascent, 2100 ft. descent. Short hike: 5½ mi., 1100 ft. ascent, 1400 ft. descent.

The panoramic view from the rocky summit of Hawksbill Mtn., one of only four 360-degree vistas in Shenandoah National Park, is reason enough to join this wintertime classic. But there’s more: we’ll also visit one of the park’s highest waterfalls! First comes the waterfall, the uppermost in a string of cascades in White Oak Canyon, which we’ll reach via a horse trail from Stony Man Parking Area on the Skyline Drive. Lunch there, after which we’ll proceed on the White Oak Fire Rd. south to Hawksbill Gap, where the short hike ends. Medium and long hikers continue to the summit of Hawksbill --the park’s highest peak--then descend the Salamander Trail to the Appalachian Trail. Medium hikers finish at Hawksbill Gap while long hikers add a segment of the AT to end at Skyland Resort.

Please RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  You need only call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

However, if you are a first-time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can ensure that you know where to meet the bus.  If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.

If after you make this reservation, you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 2:00 pm, the day before the hike, BOTH: 1.) Change RSVP to "No" --AND-- 2.) Press "Request Refund" link, and include your FULL NAME, and DATE YOU PAID.

note:  there is a $5 per seat processing fee for cancelling a reservation.

For additional details, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org

Virginia Bus Routing:  Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below.  All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.  The stop is directly on Route 29 (Lee Highway) at the local metro bus stop, not directly in front of the hotel.  The club's bus will very briefly stop in the road on Route 29 to pickup hikers.

Vienna MetroNORTH parking lot, last bus shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.  note:  There is a "south" parking lot also where there are also bus shelters.  If this is your first time meeting at Vienna, please come some minutes early to find the stop.  If by 8:15, you are not with a large group of hikers who say they're Capital Hiking Club, you are most likely at the south bus stop.  Without delay, cross into, through, and back out to the NORTH parking lot where you will see the CHC hikers.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

Please contact hike leaders during the week of the hike, and place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel, as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers are expected to be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership $12.00 per year. Mail a check to our Membership Director to receive a quarterly hike schedule and reduced rates.  More info at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/

Thanks Vera and Andy for organizing hike today. Nice seeing everyone! Two people left stuff on the bus. Someone left a bag on the bus (trader joe's bag, couple shirts, beverage container, socks). AND from another overhead bin I found a single black glove. I posted photos on this site. Les

Part of Skyline drive was closed last night due to precipitation, but was open today. If it happens that Skyline drive is closed tomorrow, we will do a comparable alternate hike in the area that doesn't require the bus to drive on Skyline drive.

It will be chilly tomorrow, but sunny, so a great day for hiking. Please remember to bring layers, hats, and mittens/gloves, along with your lunch and water. There will likely be snow on the ground, so if you feel the need, feel free to bring hiking poles and/or foot traction devices.

There is scheduled construction on the Green, Orange, Blue and Red lines for the weekend. If you are planning to take the metro to the bus stop, please give yourself the extra time to accomodate the metro delays: http://www.wmata.com/rider_tool...

With the Artic air moving in, should we try to move it to next week. Mid-20's -30's can't be too much fun hiking :)

The forecast for Saturday is 36F high and 27F low. But it will be sunny and clear. Please bring a lot of layers with you that you could keep in your backpack. This way you could add / subtract layers of clothing while hiking.

With the layers Vera mentioned and hats/gloves, with the sunny day forecast, should be a perfect day for a winter hike.

Where do I meet the group in DC as this is my first time with this group.

    • Gabby

OK - I'm new as well. Looking forward to it.

Welcome Gabby and Archana, We're happy you can come with us! The bus leaves promptly at 8am, so we ask people to arrive to the bus pickup point 10 - 15 minutes before departure time. Please bring your lunch, water, hiking gear (good shoes or boots), and some way (e.g. backpack) to carry your things. Many people bring some clothes to change into after the hike for the little social half-hour (while the final people come in from the hike...and a few minutes after with drinks and snacks provided by the club) and ride home. You can leave things on your seat on the bus while hiking. Many people like to bring a comfortable pair of shoes for the ride home too. We'll see you on Saturday! --Andy

Hi Vera, I'm new to DC and this group. I would love to join you. Since people will be doing different hikes will the bus be leaving at different times? About what time should we be back in DC? Thank you!

    January 12, 2014

    • Vera G.

Jenny, we will all start our hike together at the same time after bus drops us off at Stony Man parking area. Everyone will then have an option of hiking 5, 8, or 11 miles. The bus will pick up all three groups at the end of their hike at different locations. We expect to return to DC around 6PM-7PM.

This is one of the most picturesque hikes the club has to offer with a view of one of the park's highest waterfalls, the rocky summit of Hawksbill Mtn., the park's highest peak and one of only four 360-degree vistas in the park, and AT. This hike also provides short (5 miles), moderate (8 miles), and long (11 miles) hike options so hikers of all levels may enjoy all the trail has to offer. See you on the trail!
