PATC Map G / VA Bus

note: This is a change from the published schedule.

$25 (non-members $28)

Long hike: 12.0 mi., 3900 ft. ascent, 2900 ft. descent.  Short hike: 7.5 mi., 2600 ft. ascent, 1400 ft. descent.

In the 75-year history of the CHC, we’ve climbed Kennedy Peak--and oohed-and-ahhed at the view from its lookout tower--scores of times, but this time we'll be taking a new route.   Starting from Rt. 684 along the Shenandoah River, we’ll climb the Habron Gap Trail to the ridge crest, then turn south on the East Massanutten Mountain Trail to Kennedy Peak.  From the peak, short hikers proceed directly to the bus at Edith Gap on Rt. 675. Long hikers double-back to the Stephens Trail and follow it to Edith Gap.

Leaders:  Andy Bily andybily<at>yahoo<dot>com or 703/836--0065 --and-- Chris Sharpe chris_enterprise<at>hotmail<dot>com

Virginia Bus Routing:  Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below.  All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.  The stop is directly on Route 29 (Lee Highway) at the local metro bus stop, not directly in front of the hotel.  The club's bus will very briefly stop in the road on Route 29 to pickup hikers.

Vienna MetroNORTH parking lot, last bus shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.  Note:  There is a "south" parking lot also where there are also bus shelters.  If this is your first time meeting at Vienna, please come some minutes early to find the stop.  If by 8:15, you are not with a large group of hikers who say they're Capital Hiking Club, you are most likely at the south bus stop.  Without delay, cross into, through, and back out to the NORTH parking lot where you will see the CHC hikers.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Early reservations are appreciated! While reservations are accepted Friday, making your reservation prior to Thursday evening helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.

If contacting hike leaders during the week of the hike, please place calls prior to 9:30 p.m. As a courtesy to other hikers and to the hike leaders, please let the leaders know if you must cancel as early as possible, so that your reserved spot may be given to someone else.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers are expected to  be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership $10.00 per year. Mail a check to our Membership Director to receive a quarterly hike schedule and reduced rates.  More info at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/

Great hike! Nice initial energetic climb, and then a lovely rim hike. Great views throughout the hike, and a wonderful group of people.

We'll see you in Rosslyn. There should be 9 people getting on the bus in Rosslyn. For first timers in Roslyn, please look for the group. The bus will momentarily stop on a public bus stop (right under the pedestrian concrete walkway over the road) on Lee Highway near the Key Bridge Marriot hotel. Do not wait at the front door of the hotel...wait at the bus stop along Lee Highway. We'll see you tomorrow!

There are significant metro rail delays this weekend on the red, blue, orange, and green lines. If you're planning to use the metro rail to get to the bus pickup tomorrow, please give yourself the extra time needed: http://www.wmata.com/rider_tools/metro_service_status/advisories.cfm?AID=2796

Saturday's forcast looks like the best Saturday this year: Temperatures forecast in the low 60s with sun. Our bus will pickup hikers in DC, Roslyn, and Vienna and take them to a dropoff point at the Shendanoah river. Then hikers will climb the mountain to the ridgeline that brings us to the top of Kennedy Peak on Massanutten Mountain in Virginia. The short hike continues down from the peak to the bus relocated to wait for us at the top of Edith Gap. The long hike turns around and takes a longer route that gives more elevation drop and gain...for a challenging hike. It should be a great day to come hiking with your club.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
