Hike: Robertson Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, VA

PATC Map 10 / VA Bus

$25 for Paid Members (not Paid Member $28) + park fee/pass. Long hike: 12 mi., 2900 ft. ascent/descent. Short hike: up to 8 mi., up to 2200 ft. ascent/descent.

It’s Spring! Celebrate by climbing Robertson Mtn, one of Shenandoah’s under-appreciated mountains. Although less famous than neighboring Old Rag, it too offers a stunning view from its summit rocks--and is less crowded. Our hike starts at the settlement of Nethers and heads up the Weakley Hollow Fire Rd. to its junction with the Robertson Mtn. Trail. Hikers ascend the latter – steeply in parts – to the top, then back down the other side of the mountain, west on the Old Rag fire road a short distance, and then around and back via the Corbin Mountain trail - with a few stream crossings, and views of Robertson mountain and the valleys to the north.  Short hikers also climb to the top of Robertson Mountain, and retrace their steps to Nethers:  For hikers wishing a shorter route, they can turn around anywhere on the ascent of Robertson to return to Nethers.

note:  The route is slightly changed from the printed schedule's description.

Leaders: Andy Bily 703/[masked] and Thuy 571/[masked]

-------

Please RSVP and pay for this hike on Meetup.  You only need to call the hike leaders if you have questions regarding the hike.

However, if you are a first-time hiker with us, please let the hike leaders know so that they can ensure that you know where to meet the bus.  If you've RSVP'd with us, we don't want to leave you behind.

If after you make this reservation, you need to cancel and would like to request a refund, before 2:00 p.m., the day before the hike, BOTH: 1.) Change RSVP to "No" --AND-- 2.) Press "Request Refund" link, and include your FULL NAME, and DATE YOU PAID.

note:  there is a $5 per seat processing fee for cancelling a reservation.

For additional details, visit our website and refer to our Frequently Asked Questions at www.capitalhikingclub.org

Virginia Bus Routing:  Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure times listed below.  All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Vienna Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Departure points and times are as follows:

DC - 16th and I St., NW, at 8:00 a.m. SHARP

Rosslyn – Key Bridge Marriott Hotel Bus Stop at approximately 8:10 a.m.  The stop is directly on Route 29 (Lee Highway) at the local metro bus stop, not directly in front of the hotel.  The club's bus will very briefly stop in the road on Route 29 to pickup hikers.

Vienna Metro – NORTH parking lot, last bus shelter (Nutley St. Exit off Interstate 66 on North/Vienna side of I-66) at approximately 8:25 a.m.  Note:  There is a "south" parking lot also where there are also bus shelters.  If this is your first time meeting at Vienna, please come some minutes early to find the stop.  If by 8:15, you are not with a large group of hikers who say they're Capital Hiking Club, you are most likely at the south bus stop.  Without delay, cross into, through, and back out to the NORTH parking lot where you will see the CHC hikers.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips.  Making a reservation prior to Friday morning ensures your seat on the bus, and helps prevent a hike from being cancelled due to low- sign-ups.  If contacting hike leaders during the week of the hike, please call prior to 9:30 p.m.  As a courtesy to others, please let us know if you must cancel, as early as possible (see posted refund policy), to give another hiker the chance to join the hike.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers are expected to  be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership Dues $10.00 per year. Click the "Member dues" link (on the left side of this page) to pay the $10 member dues to support the Capital Hiking Club.  Dues help pay for the administrative and web costs of running the club, and you will also benefit from a reduced rate for club hikes.  More information at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/

There is normally an entrance fee of $8 for each person. However, when people have an annual pass, that pass gets 3 other people in for no fee.

We would need 12 people with passes to get everyone in for no cost.

It looks like we have about 8 people with park passes, so those people, and any of their +1's on meetup, get in for no fee.

If there are four people who want to purchase an annual pass for the shenandoah, it's $30 (you can do this at the old rag parking lot). If not, then we'll split the remaining fee (minus the 8 cards we have), and purchase entrance tickets. So please bring $2 to $4 to cover this.

We plan for the bus to depart promptly at 8am from 16th and I NW, so please give yourself the needed time to be at your stop 10 or 15 minutes early.

    We'll see you tomorrow!

The weather forecast looks great for tomorrow. Cloudy in the morning, then some clearing in the afternoon with a high of 68 degrees.

As it will be warmer than we've seen in a loooong time, please make sure to bring plenty of water.

This hike has over 2000 feet continuous elevation gain to ascend to the top of Robertson mountain, for both the short and long hikes. The hike can be considered moderately strenuous to strenuous. If you do find it too much before you reach the peak, you're free to take breaks, and enjoy the wonderful scenery along the climb. If you decide you've had enough climbing, you have the option of turning around and following the short route (an out and back route) back to the bus.

Hi Andy, I signed up when the meet up site indicated there was only 1 spot left....You made a mention there was only 47 seats on the bus, does this mean I'm on a wait list?- JM

    • Andy B

See reply above. We'll see you tomorrow!

To clarify a little... Everyone listed as "going" has a seat reserved for them. We have two people who are going to meet us at the trail head, so that's why the "total count" is 49 instead of 47. Because this hike is a circuit (starting and ending in the same place), it is possible for those two to join us: Often (maybe usually), that's not possible--because the bus drops off in one place, and picks up in another.

Hi all, for the regulars, is the 630 return time pretty reliable? I just need to know if it is likely to be later - earlier is no problem! Thanks.

    March 19, 2014

    • Andy B

We have a pretty good formula on doing the hikes to get us back on time on Saturday and will be making the effort to adhere. Usually we are able to keep to the schedule. However, with the number of people on the hike and traffic conditions on I-66 on Saturday afternoon, occasionally something happens that causes a delay.

I haven't signed up yet, primarily because of the admonition at http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/upload/old_rag_area.pdf which says "Do not attempt to hike Old Rag if the rocks
are wet or icy." and the 50% chance of rain on Saturday. Would the same apply to Robertson?

    March 18, 2014

    • Andy B

Hi PRice, as we've tried to outline in the posts, this hike is different from Old Rag, in that there are not places where you have to pull yourself over boulders. It is good to give just due to general hike warnings from the National Park Service...as any there are risks in any outdoor activity. There are places where the mountain is steep, and the trail is rocky. There is also the possiblity that there will be some patches of snow...although we hope Spring does arrive this week, and help us out with that! Regarding the long range forecast of a possibility of showers...well, we frequently have those kind of forecasts on days that turn out to be beautiful....(continued)

      March 18, 2014

    • Andy B

Although sometimes the forecasts can be right and we can get some rain, so often a good idea to bring a rain coat. I'd suggest you look at the weather forecast and make your decision of when/if to signup based on your experience and comfort level: The club does not cancel hikes based solely on a possiblity of showers. Hope to see you hiking with us soon! --Andy

Same question here. Is it possible to visit the organizer to pay by cash? And where should I go to meet you guys?

      March 16, 2014

    • Andy B

I will send each of you an email to answer your questions, but for others... You don't need to have a PayPal account to make the payment for the hike: When it asks to pay, click the PayPal link, and it will allow entry of a credit card/debit card for payment (without needing to create the PayPal account).

Thuy and I scouted the hike today, and it's a beautiful view of the valley below and Old Rag mountain from the top of Robertson mountain. Both the short and long hikes will ascent to the summit. We've re-routed the long hike to return along the Corin Mountain trail...for additional views (looking back at Robertson mountain and views to the north).
