PATC Map 4 / MD Bus

$25 for paid members (others $28).

Long hike: 12 mi., 2000 ft. ascent/descent. Short hike: 6½ mi., 1600 ft. ascent, 900 ft. descent.  There is an option for the short hikers to add a few more miles at the end of the hike.

We venture north to two of Pennsylvania’s state forests for this longtime Capital favorite. The mountain laurel may be in bloom as we hike along several creeks. Views from the ridgeline await us. We will begin in a picnic area at Michaux State Forest and follow the Appalachian Trail (AT) north and up in elevation past hikers huts at Tumbling Run before climbing Buzzard Peak to enjoy the views for lunch. Then we continue north on the AT, with short hikers going as far as Rt. 233, and long hikers continuing past Rocky Mtn. all the way to Caledonia State Park. Short hikers will have the option to hike back along the picturesque creek and meet the long hikers

Leaders: Chris Powell bernchrisp<at>aol.com and Vicki Bishton 301/320--9542

Maryland Bus Routing: Please arrive 10 - 15 minutes before departure time listed below. All departure points are Metro accessible; however, if you are driving, please use only the Grosvenor Metro departure point, as parking is extremely limited at other locations.

Bus departs from 16th and I (Eye) Streets, NW, Washington DC (two blocks north of the White House), at 8:00 AM, and continues to:

National Cathedral Area - Wisconsin Avenue and Woodley Road, departing at approximately 8:10 AM; then continues to:

Near Chevy Chase, MD - Friendship Heights Metro Stop (Western Avenue/East side exit), departing at approximately 8:20 AM; then continues to:

Bethesda, MD - across from Bethesda Metro Stop (northeast corner of East-West Highway and Wisconsin) (by request only--no stop here unless the hike leader has confirmed reservations), departing at approximately 8:25 AM; then continues to:

Rockville / North Bethesda, MD - Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station bus shelter nearest to Metro Station entrance between Metro Station and parking garage (Wisconsin Avenue / Rockville Pike / Rt. 355 exit off I-495), departing at approximately 8:35 AM.

Reservations: The Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited to join on all trips. Making your reservation prior to Friday morning helps to ensure your seat on the bus, and prevents the cancellation of the hike due to low sign-ups.  If contacting hike leaders during the week of the hike, please call prior to 9:30 p.m.  As a courtesy to others, please let us know if you must cancel, as early as possible (see posted refund policy), to give another hiker the chance to join the hike.

Cost, what to wear, what to bring: Transportation costs are listed for each hike. Bring sufficient food and water for a day's outing in a day pack or fanny pack with individual First Aid articles, a whistle, and extra clothing according to the season. Sturdy boots or shoes are a necessity. It is recommended to carry 8 oz. of water per mile to be hiked. Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are also recommended.

Liability: Hikers are responsible for their own safety and must assume risks and liability for all outings. CHC leaders, officers, and representatives shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any trips or Club activities. Hikers are expected to be able to keep a 2 mph pace.

(Optional) Membership Dues $10.00 per year. Click the "Member dues" link (on the left side of this page) to pay the $10 member dues to support the Capital Hiking Club.  Dues help pay for the administrative and web costs of running the club, and you will also benefit from a reduced rate for club hikes.  More information at: http://www.capitalhikingclub.org/

    Hi everyone,

Tomorrow should be a great hike (even though it is raining cats and dogs now). A few suggestions:

    1) you may want to bring sandals as your boots will be muddy by the end of the hike
    2) poles would be a good suggestion if you have them as the trail could be slippery in spots;
    3) bring bug spray as the gnats were out last week and it is tick season

    See you tomorrow

    Hi Christine,
This is the first time I will be boarding the bus at 16th and I. Does the bus actually park on the street? If not, which corner should I wait?
    Looking forward to the hike,

    May 16, 2014

    • Christine P.

Sanjeev: it is a silver bus on the southeast corner ( the bus pulls up on 16).
