Wilder Rear Entry

We will meet in the large dirt parking lot described above (no permit required), which is on the right if headed uphill. It's only about 2 miles uphill of the Hwy 1/Hwy9 traffic light and is just passed the spot where the train tracks cross Hwy 9. We will enter Pogonip from Henry Cowell and cross UCSC's Upper Campus until we pop-out in the meadow on Empire Grade. Once we cross the street we are entering Wilder from the rear. We will hike to the rest-stop we have used before. The one with several picnic tables. After we rest there we will return the same way. In the future we can get a bit more creative. This group moves at a brisk pace and we will climb to Empire Grade twice, although not from Sea Level. I estimate 15 miles and 2000 feet, but we won't know for sure until someone hikes it with GPS ( not me. ) :-) I hiked it today (Easter ) in 4 hours without a rest stop so 4.5 hours with a rest stop is accurate.

Yes Veronica. From capitola take highway 1 north thru the Fishhook as though you are going to continue northbound on Hwy 1. At the first light make a right on Hwy 9/River St (as though you are going to Costco) but continue straight on 9 for approx 2 miles. When your car tires cross the train tracks (this only happens once on all of Hwy 9) proceed another 100 yards and park in the only dirt pullout with parking lot there is that can accommodate 20-25 cars. There are no other pullouts that big. I'll be there in a 2 door white honda civic.

Hey Sara, Looking forward to this hike. I am not very familiar with Henry Cowell. Is it possible to get a better direction for the parking lot?

That's a great hike idea, but no need to scare people :-)
The peak elevation (where you cross Empire Grade) is 1,000 feet, and the picnic tables at the big eucalyptus grove are at 800 feet.so the climbing elevation will be a lot less than 2,000. And the distance has got to be less, because it's really difficult to travel much more than 3 MPH on dirt trails. Sadly those eucalyptus trees all appear to be dying.
