Cement Ship to Moss Landing

We will meet at the Aptos Park and Ride, across from the Aptos Library on Soquel Drive 40 yards north of State Park Drive (which is your Hwy 1 exit.) At 8am we will ferry cars down to Moss Landing State Beach and return to Aptos. Then we will walk down to the Cement Ship and head south. We did this hike in the winter with Rene's group and it was a lovely walk in the sand for 15 miles and 5 hours. There were lovely stretches of beach with no other humans for miles. At Moss Landing State Beach we will squeeze into the cars and drive 1 minute across the bridge to Phil's Fish House to eat the meal you've just dreamed about for 5 hours while staring at and smelling the sea! After stuffing ourselves with seafood we will all return to Aptos together. If you sign up please be serious about attending and post how many people your car can seat. We need to make sure in advance that we ferry cars that have enough space to transport all the walkers back. We do cross the Pajaro River, which in a normal year would mean wading in a few feet of water. When we did this hike in late January the River was not making it to the sea. It ran dry before reaching the sea. I imagine that is the same but I am not guaranteeing it. Be prepared for the unlikely event of a water crossing. Bring lots of water, sunblock and all the snacks you will need to power yourself for 15 miles. Remember, walking in the sand is more tiring than walking on a firm surface. Any questions?

I'll be there at 8 am - I don't know about 126 oz of water per Sara - I not sure whether I could even carry that much!
I count 6 people and 2 cars to be left there! (plus LuLu if she wants to drop off her car there as well)

Hi john. Good to hike with you. There's another group you might also like to join called something like Hike plus One. That group moves at a speed I think you will be mid-pack in todY and they always go out to lunch afterward. Lots of fun! See you again soon !

Good plan Sara. The Phil's part will be fun tho like last time. Bring something warm as Phil's can get a little chilly. Phil's is the unseen n oasis on this hike.

Yes, bring a warmie like Veronica says. Be ready to adjust your clothing throughout the day for cold, heat and wind. Lots of water too. Last time I drank all of my 90 oz. Camelback and ran dry before the end. I'll have another 36 oz. or so this time.

Hi TR. There are several hike leaders in this group so I will only speak for myself. Most of the trails I walk on do not allow dogs. The beach of course is different. I don't want dogs on any my hikes and I have 3 dogs at home. I take them for their walks. My hikes are my time to be with humans. They are "Mommy's night out" for me! :-)

Thank you for your prompt response. Just to be clear…are dogs ever allowed on any of these events?

Amy, will you be the one dragging the massive backpack down the beach for practice? :-)

    • Amy W.

Maybe I'll just fill it with water and sand for maximum practice weight

Yay Rene! Glad you'll be with us to do again the hike you conceived during the winter that wasn't!

Sounds like a lot of fun! On my bucket list is to walk the whole California coast, albeit in bits and pieces. I already did Boardwalk to La Selva. So it will be fun to finish off the latter portion for me. There is plenty of free parking by the Cement Ship at Broadway & Seacliff... to shorten the walk by a half mile.

Hi Kenneth. I picked a location we have met at before to keep it simple. Also a few people like the stroll through the back of the cemetery at the beginning.
