Caramel Film Club Screening of "God Grew Tired Of Us" on Mon 4th Mar

There's a lovely private cinema next to Balham station with seating for up to 25 Caramel Film Club Members and at 7.30 we will be holding a screening of:

"God Grew Tired Of Us" an award winning, critically acclaimed documentary, narrated by Nicole Kidman.

"Three young men leave behind a land in chaos to find new lives in a thoroughly different culture in this documentary. As the African nation of Sudan fell into political disarray near the dawn of the 21st century, with unspeakable violence following in its wake, thousands of refugees attempted to flee the country, making their way into Kenya in hopes of earning passage elsewhere. Jon Bul Dau, Daniel Abu Pach, and Panther Bior were three such people who eventually came to the United States, and filmmaker Christopher Quinn spent four years following them on their journey in a new and unfamiliar land. In God Grew Tired of Us, Quinn documents the young men as they struggle to build new lives for themselves, acquaint themselves with the "American" way of doing things, the difficulties of being black in a primarily white culture, and try to track down the friends and family they were forced to leave behind."

There'll be a chance to chill after the film and enjoy some of the drinks and cocktails.

All you need to do is simply RSVP with payment to secure a seat!

Great film choice Dave - eye opening. Hope to see more of these kinds of educational films thrown into the mix in the future too

One thing that springs to mind with me, is that many of these ‘boys’ would have been 24-26 year old men by the time they arrived in the US and approaching 30 by the documentaries conclusion. However many years of living in near starvation and dehydrated conditions, combined with various bouts of illness and intolerable living conditions left their bodies appearing like puberty had only just past them a few years earlier. They certainly were inspirational.

On a lighter note, I have a confession. Not unlike the guy on the plane journey, I may have eating a lump or two of butter when I was a very young child, as though it was a piece of cheese. To this day anything more than a light spread on marg/butter on a sandwich turns my ‘tummy’ something rotten!!

A very thought providing, humbling documentary. These boys had nothing left but their strength of spirit in their determination to survive. Those who survived did not say I've survived let me get on with my life, they gave back what they achieved. They did not forget because what is known can never be unknown. The only thought they had was how can I help. So many lessons, so many thoughts...................................Thank you Dave.

Hi all. Just want to find out if another screening at 9.30 on this night would help anyone who wanted to see this but didn't get a place. Just 'like' this comment and if there are enough likes I'll get it arranged for you. Stay warm ;-) Dave
