Green Mobility: Thrive in DC Without a Car

The DC Metro area is making huge strides in green mobility options. The simple truth is, you can live a full, heathly and planet-friendly life here without a car. At this workshop, you'll learn how to get along just fine and save a fortune by not owning a car -- or at least cutting way back. Our three expert speakers (see below) will introduce you what DC has to offer to bicyclists, Arlington County's successful car-free diet program and how Zipcar's car sharing program leaves no excuse to keep that 4,000lb hunk of metal in your drive way. Join us, and bring your questions!

Chris Hamilton, Chief Commuter Services, Arlington County

Chris will be talking of the 'Arlington car-free diet' program. He
will share how to calculate your transportation carbon dioxide emissions and how local alternatives to the automobile can make for significant reductions.

Chris Holben, Supervisory Transportation Planner, DC Department of Transportation

Chris will be talking about DC's bicycling options, including DC's unique bicycle sharing program, 'SmartBike DC'. This is a unique program that could serve for a model for other major cities to follow.

Anthony Marinos, Regional Marketing Coordinator, Zipcar

Anthony will talking about how Zipcar is transforming how people use cars in the DC metro area. He will outline their self-service, on-demand cars sharing service and address the impact in reducing carbon emissions, as 59% of car owners have gotten rid of their vehicle in DC. To date, Zipcar estimates it has taken more than 100,000 cars off the road worldwide, resulting in savings of more than 16 million gallons of gasoline and 150 million pounds of CO2 annually.

Just the sort of thing that needs to be done to make our streets safer, more pleasant and less polluting. I've already been able to pass some literature on to someone contemplating a car-free life. I've been doing fine (actually getting better and better) without a car since 1993.

Wow, what a fantastic panel! I feel like I have a really good understanding of what the DC area has to offer for green mobility now. A few cool things I learned: ZipCar will soon have a iPhone app that you can use to unlock your car (any more), SmartBike will expand to 120 locations in 2010, and Arlington has 3 "commuter shops" that you can stop by to get advice on how to get from point A to point B as greenly as possible.

I really enjoyed the panel. It was very informative and the speakers were dynamic. I can't wait to go to the next meeting. I really loved getting the free book! Already started reading it :)
